I’m noticing that so many students in grades 1-5 are struggling in reading. I feel that they missed the basic skills due to many factors the past few years.
What can we as educators do to help these students while still teaching our current curriculum. RTI is not enough. Classroom teachers have to be helping. What are your thoughts?

Top priority! Everything else will fall into place when these are explicitly taught. There are great SEL books on all these topics! Remember that Early childhood education is through 2nd grade. Post Covid, it may need to be taught or modeled at all grade levels. What are your thoughts?

I’ve had young students tell me that reading was boring! As the librarian, I asked what they found interesting in our world? Was it science, technology, sports, etc…? All gave me answers and I was able to direct them to books in the library that they could and did enjoy reading. A few continued to say that reading was boring so we delve further into issues such as vision or reading comprehension and reading disabilities. Students deserve our help! Students deserve to enjoy reading the vast number of books at their fingertips. Students deserve our best efforts to help them grow and be productive in our society. It all starts with reading!
