Not Your Typical High School

Imagine a school that is revolutionizing education, a place where you’ll begin your high school career inside a hands-on science museum, move to the campus of a Fortune 500 company for your sophomore year and spend your final two years on a downtown college campus. All of that is reality at MC²STEM, where you’ll be immersed in science, technology, engineering and math

courses in dynamic learning environments. MC2 STEM is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, one of the most economically challenged school districts in the country, where the average high school graduation rate was just 60 percent in 2011. The school was created through a public-private partnership among a number of organizations, with the intention of providing students with an integrated curriculum that is informed by real-world experiences. Students attend classes at campuses embedded in business and school sites around the city -- the Great Lakes Science Center, General Electric (GE) Lighting's Nela Park campus, Cleveland State University, and various college campuses. At any given time, you may see freshmen and sophomores immersed in workshops with tutors from NASA or in rigorous project, mentorship programs with engineers from GE Lighting, or juniors and seniors stepping up to demanding internship at a variety of local businesses. While STEM is the school's emphasis, teachers cover all subjects required by Ohio's state standards through integrated trans-disciplinary approach. The grading system is based on mastery, meaning that every student in grades nine and ten must achieve at least 90 percent on benchmark assessments in order to receive credit. There are no enrollment criteria; students are admitted by lottery and they come from every corner of Cleveland.

Dear MC2STEM High School Staff, Students, Families, and Friends,

It is with mixed emotions that I am writing to share that after 13 years with MC2STEM High School, I plan to leave my position as Head of School as of December 17, 2021. It has been my true privilege to serve as principal of MC2STEM High School and I can honestly say that my time here has been full of blessings. We have grown immensely, we have built deep relationships, and we have learned alongside each other as students, staff, parents, and community partners. We have created a culture of innovation, critical thought, questioning, and support that is talked about throughout the STEM community and beyond. When people hear about MC2STEM, the reputation is full of creativity, innovation, engagement, and that all-encompassing MANIAC PRIDE that all true maniacs have!

After much thought, personal reflection, and professional guidance, I have accepted the position of Partner of Learning Center Curriculum and Education with Jumpstart. It is a position that aligns deeply with what I believe and a great forward step in a career that is built on a love for learning and seeing the Cleveland Community grow.

Saying goodbye is never easy; however, I have full confidence in the shared mission and vision we have established here at MC2STEM High School. I have been humbled by how the Maniac community has embraced me as a leader, and I am so grateful for the people and ideas you have entrusted in my care. MC2STEM High School and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District has been an excellent place to work! Over the past twelve years, we have built a platform that has allowed innovative teaching practices that embrace 21st century skills and tools for our students. We have grown a strong community that has come together over hardships and has celebrated much.

I am moving on, but the shared MC2STEM mission and vision continues to be strong. MC2STEM continues to grow because of the active support by all members of this community. As I step out of this role, please know that MC2STEM will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to keep in touch.

It has been my honor to serve all of you.

Enjoy your time off today and know that we are thinking of you!

This week has been incredibly difficult for the MC2STEM Community as we have suffered the loss of a teacher. Mrs. Chronister was the 11th Grade Engineering teacher, but also our resident nerd. A Minecraft enthusiast, the robotics coach, a leader of our Dungeons and Dragons club....in a very selfless act, her family is setting up a Memorial Scholarship Fund in her honor to be awarded to students at MC2STEM High School.

Here is the GoFundMe link to the Danielle Chronister Memorial Scholarship Fund. Please feel free to share. We want to continue her legacy and love for chemistry and teaching.
