Bilingual Brown Babies is a lifestyle intended for families that want to foster foreign language development and bilingualism in their children.

Becoming a bilingual family takes a great deal effort and we're here to support you in that process! As a parent raising all four of my children as bilingual in English and Spanish, a trained professional in intercultural communication and a researcher in the area of African American bilinguals, I bring a wealth of experience to your family in order to support your efforts of becoming a multilingual family.

Ya sé tan atrasado, but Spirit had me runnin through tests TUH-DAY! The thing about FAITH, your schedule, your plans….no se importa.

What did IMANI tell you on this last day? How will FAITH remind you that disruption starts with Spirit?

It’s not a predictor of your year. It’s a reminder to trust beyond your own thinking.

I pray IMANI showed out for you so you know where your faith is taking you this year!

Habari gani? KUUMBA!

A secret passion of mine is creative writing. I have dozens of poems, short stories, musings, in every single journal I’ve owned since 1995.

I also have sketches. My grandmother was a PHENOMENAL artista who lived during a time where that wasn’t supported.

One of my words for 2026 is actually KUUMBA, or creativity most specifically. I’m letting my imagination takeover next year….

Kuumba invites us to imagine beyond limitation. Language learning doesn’t have to be rigid, deficit-based, or exclusionary. At Bilingual Brown Babies, we celebrate creativity in how children learn, communicate, and express themselves—Movement, joy, culture, imagination—learning should feel alive.

Habari gani? NIA!

Today is the day we focus on PURPOSE. This is usually the day I select my 3 words for the upcoming year. Words to center my thoughts, guide my path and remind me of my own purpose.

What 3 words would push you further into your dreams?

Habari gani? UJAMAA!

¡Mira! If you have been following me all these years and don’t have at least 3 Black businesses you can support today…I know I’ve given A MÍNIMO a half dozen….

En serio, Ujamaa reminds us to invest in what invests in us. Supporting Black-centered, culturally responsive organizations, people and products is a form of economic justice. When we circulate our dollars with intention, we sustain our future.

Ujima teaches us that raising multilingual children is shared work —- community work, VILLAGE work. That’s why he cambiado la enfoca de Bilingual Brown Babies to now more intentionally support families, educators, and scholars—because language justice lives across spaces, across circles, en todas las comunidades. When we collaborate, children benefit.

¿Sabes? I have section on my website dedicated to helping you expand your community. Stuff is a li’l new over there because I have changed some things, so today is a good day to see what’s different!

Habari gani? KUJICHAGULIA!

Self determination is about the ways we move for ourselves. It benefits the community because if you’re better, we’re better!

I have been uber excited for a friend of mine who has embodied KUJICHAGULIA by taking risks never even dreamed about before this year! Their growth is going impact sooooooo many people!

What a risk you can take that will push you in ways you’ve never imagined?

❤️🖤💚

Day 1: Umoja (Unidad/Unité)

Habari gani, ma famille! UMOJA!

Umoja reminds us that language learning is a collective effort. At Bilingual Brown Babies, we’re building a village that includes families, educators, scholars, and multilingual households committed to Black brilliance across languages. Unity means no one does this work alone.

So I did something y’all…in efforts to fortify mi comunidad that reflects the Beloved Language Community I’ve been writing for YEARS, I’ve updated the Bilingual Brown Babies website:

www.bilingualbrownbabies.net

I would love it if you would check out the changes and I would love to hear what you think!

There are soooooooo many ways to support community today, I’m am simply adding my Beloved Language Community to the mix!

👉🏾 Call to Action: Visit the site and explore resources designed to support your role in the village—home, classroom, or community.

I may have been callada over here, but y’all know my work don’t stop!

Universal Design for Learning challenges us to offer our children multiple ways for their success. ¿Qué significa para mi? I can get beginning speakers to structure a debate with a li’l elbow grease in planning and meeting them where they are…..

Before y’all get to jumping in the comments about what you see, PAUSE. Te dije that these are BEGINNING speakers and UDL suggests you meet the learner where they are in their experience with language….this is only part of our process…..

📘 On Language, Liberation, and Legacy: Why I Wrote Four White Papers for Black Families and Educators in less than 1 year 👀 05/02/2025

Generated using AI When I launched Bilingual Brown Babies and then subsequently this blog (and breathed new life into an older blog), I did so with a clear purpose: to give Black families tools to navigate, challenge, and reimagine what language learning looks like for us. Over the years, I’ve heard the same questions come up in kitchens, at conferences, and in classrooms:...

PENSAMIENTOS: Sometimes if you activate the creative brain, your language subconscious will take over.

I had a group who were seguros that they couldn’t get el subjuntivo. Today I gave them a timed challenge to create an artistic poster for Día Mundial de la Tierra using only what was around them and put a phrase on it with a recommendation.

100% used the subjunctive without even thinking about it.

Might there have a few errors here and there? Sure, PERO when we get out of our own way……..
