📚☀️ Beating the Summer Slide One Fun Activity at a Time! ☀️📚
The youth at Horizon Childcare Center had an amazing time putting their knowledge to the test during the ABC Read Jeopardy Game! This exciting literacy-based activity brought learning to life as students worked together, answered questions, and competed in a fun and positive environment.
Games like Jeopardy are more than just fun—they provide powerful educational benefits that help children continue learning throughout the summer months:
✅ Strengthens Literacy Skills – Students practice reading, vocabulary, comprehension, and recalling information they have learned.
✅ Encourages Teamwork – Youth learn how to collaborate, communicate, and support one another to achieve a common goal.
✅ Promotes Healthy Competition – Friendly competition motivates students to participate, stay engaged, and challenge themselves academically.
✅ Builds Critical Thinking Skills – Players must analyze questions, make connections, and think strategically before responding.
✅ Boosts Confidence and Participation – Every correct answer helps children feel successful and encourages them to actively engage in learning.
At ABC Read, we believe literacy should be engaging, interactive, and fun. Activities like our Jeopardy Game are creative ways to bring youth together during the summer while helping them develop important academic skills, build positive relationships, and prevent learning loss.
Together, we are creating enriching literacy experiences that inspire a love of reading and learning beyond the classroom.

This summer, ABC READ and Reading Is Freedom are proud to partner with Horizon Child Care Center to provide enriching literacy experiences that inspire, engage, and empower our youth.
During one of our recent sessions, the school-age students enjoyed a read-aloud of the award-winning book Sulwe, a powerful story about a young girl who struggles to love her dark skin and discovers the beauty within herself. After the story, students participated in an interactive skit where Sulwe was teased because of her skin color. In a beautiful display of empathy and courage, another student stepped in to defend her, showing what it means to stand up against hurtful words and support others.
The students were fully engaged throughout the experience, actively discussing themes of self-love, self-acceptance, kindness, and confidence. By bringing stories to life through dramatic play and meaningful conversations, we help young people make personal connections to books and discover the joy of reading.
These are the kinds of intentional, interactive, and culturally relevant literacy experiences that help cultivate a lifelong love of reading. At ABC READ and Reading Is Freedom, we are committed to ensuring that children not only improve their literacy skills but also see themselves reflected in the stories they read. Together, we are building confident readers, compassionate leaders, and lifelong learners this summer and beyond.

At ABC READ and Reading Is Freedom, we believe that every child deserves access to enriching literacy experiences, regardless of their zip code. That is why we are excited about our growing partnership with Horizon Child Care Center. What started as a vision and a plan is now being put into action as we work together to help children beat the summer slide.
Throughout the summer, students are participating in engaging read-alouds, hands-on arts and crafts activities, and meaningful literacy experiences that make learning fun. We are also providing books for children to take home so they can build their own personal libraries and continue their reading journey with their families.
This collaboration is proof that real change happens when organizations come together with a shared purpose. We are not simply talking about the literacy challenges facing our children—we are providing real, actionable solutions. By investing in our youth today, we are helping Black, Brown, and underserved children gain access to the resources, opportunities, and experiences they need to become confident readers and lifelong learners.
You can help us continue this important work. We are seeking donations from community members, businesses, and supporters to help provide books, arts and crafts supplies, journals for our school-age students, and ABC READ bags. Every contribution helps us place valuable literacy resources directly into the hands of children who need them most.
Together, we can ensure that our children continue learning, growing, and thriving all summer long and beyond.

What a wonderful time we had at the East Cleveland Public Library’s Founder’s Day celebration on Saturday, May 30!
ABC Read was honored to be a part of this community event where we gave away 25 books, provided fresh fruit and water, and shared information about our upcoming Youth Book Club and Summer Reading Camp.
One of the highlights of the day was hosting our very first Founder’s Day Trivia Challenge! Participants answered questions about Founder’s Day for a chance to win prizes. Congratulations to all of our winners! A special shout-out to Ms. Goodrum, who won a copy of H.E.R. Healed Empowered Resilient, the book I co-authored.
This was truly a literacy-filled day of fun, learning, and community connection. New relationships were formed, home libraries were built, and knowledge was gained. Most importantly, families left with resources and inspiration to make reading a part of their summer.
ABC Read is helping families start their summer off the right way—with books, learning, and a love of reading.
This is the good life.

Fight, flight, freeze, or fawn (appease) are four common responses people can have when they are faced with traumatic events. Trauma goes far beyond simply being upset, frustrated, or angry. Trauma can deeply impact a person’s ability to cope, process emotions, and feel safe emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
In this powerful clip from my conversation with Dr. Yusuf Malik Frederick about his thought-provoking book I Love Islam but I’m Tired of Muslims: How Spiritual Abuse and Racial Trauma Intersect to Cause Psychological Distress Among African American Muslims, he breaks down what trauma really is and why understanding it matters.
These are conversations our communities desperately need because too many people are silently suffering while trying to navigate racism, religious harm, emotional pain, and spiritual confusion.
This clip is only a small portion of our deep and honest discussion. Head over to my YouTube channel to listen to the full conversation and join us as we unpack healing, faith, trauma, and truth.
