ABC READ, INC ABC READ, INC is a non-profit 501c3 organization. Our mission is to help develop and nurture the love of reading in every child. ABC READ, INC.

was founded so that Black families and those who come from underserved communities
where reading proficiency is very low can be read aloud to and they will be able to take books with them so they can begin to build their own libraries at home. We also want our children to have access to everything that will help them gain the necessary literacy skills they will need, so they can thrive in a world that is advancing every single day. ABC READ also understands that a major component to a child developing the love of reading is they must begin to pick healthful foods to eat in particular at snack time. Just like there are countless number of studies that show reading aloud to children is one of the most effective ways to improve a child's reading skills; studies also show that there is a strong link between children who eat healthful snacks and doing well academically. This is why after our fun and interactive read alouds we make sure to give children healthy snacks to choose from, especially those who come from areas where it is a food desert and there are a lack of quality grocery stores in their communities.

📚 This is why we keep reading aloud to our babies!

A Bad Case of Stripes is one of my favorite stories to share, and this week I read it with the children at Horizon Euclid Child Care Center.

With my pre-K students, we read, asked questions, talked about the story and interacted along the way. With the 3-year-olds, I adjusted the experience—we looked at the pictures and simply talked about what we saw. Same book, different approach, still building literacy!

Since June, we’ve consistently shared books with our pre-K students, and I’ve watched them grow from being a little antsy during storytime to becoming engaged, curious and captivated. ❤️

Consistent read-alouds help children:
📖 Build vocabulary
🧠 Strengthen comprehension
❤️ Develop positive relationships with books

Through our partnership with ABC READ, Horizon Euclid Child Care Center and Reading Is Freedom, children are also receiving books to build their home libraries and healthy snacks.

🔥 Before Shirley Chisholm made history, she was a little Black girl learning how to be bold enough to challenge it.

This Sunday for Read Aloud Sunday, we’re reading Shirley Chisholm Dared: The Story of the First Black Woman in Congress! 📚

Shirley grew up developing the daring, persistent, and rebellious spirit that would eventually lead her to break barriers and become the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress.

She refused to believe that being Black or being a woman meant she had to stay in her place, stay quiet, or wait for someone else to give her permission to lead.

And THAT is a message our children need.

Be bold. Speak up. Keep going. Dare to go where no one who looks like you has gone before.

📚 “Why do you think Sophie is letting her friend take the red sash off her dress?”

While reading The Kindest Red: A Story of Hijab and Friendship, I asked our Pre-K little ones to make a prediction about what they thought would happen next.

Asking, “What do you think is going to happen?” is a simple but powerful question! Making predictions helps children:

✨ Build critical-thinking skills by using clues to figure out what might happen next.
✨ Strengthen comprehension because they have to think about what they’ve already heard in the story.
✨ Stay engaged and curious because now they’re listening to see if their prediction was right!

Don’t just read the story—get them thinking, talking, predicting, and connecting! 📚❤️

❤️ Kindness, friendship, books & a whole lot of RED! 📚

Our latest read-aloud at Horizon Childcare Center featured The Kindest Red: A Story of Hijab and Friendship by Ibtihaj Muhammad. The children learned about the power of kindness, thoughtfulness, friendship, and showing love between siblings.

After the story, we kept the learning going with a fun coloring activity featuring things that are RED! ❤️🍎🌹

And, of course, we put books directly into little hands! 📚 Since we began our visits to Horizon, each child has received 7 books to take home and build their own home library!

That’s what cultivating a culture of literacy looks like—read the books, talk about the books, enjoy the books, and make sure children OWN books. 🙌🏾

📚 IMAGINE NOT SPEAKING FOR YEARS… THEN A POEM HELPS YOU FIND YOUR VOICE.

Before James Earl Jones became known for one of the most powerful voices in the world, he was a child with a severe stutter who became afraid and embarrassed to speak.

Then something powerful happened.

He wrote a poem called “An Ode to the Grapefruit.” 🍊 His teacher encouraged him to read his own words aloud—and that moment became part of his journey toward finding his voice.

This Sunday, I’m reading An Ode to the Grapefruit: How James Earl Jones Found His Voice—a beautiful story about finding your voice, discovering your gifts, overcoming fear and walking into your purpose.

That’s the POWER of a read-aloud! 📖 A book can build vocabulary and comprehension, spark meaningful conversations and help a child see what’s possible for their own life.

For generations, many of us were taught that yelling, whupping, threatening, or condemning children was how you got them to listen, learn, and do better.

We’re choosing something different.
