In the early morning hours of September 4th, a suspected intoxicated driver drove a truck into the apartment building where young Lorenzo was sleeping in his bed. With Lorenzo trapped underneath the hot engine of the truck, responding officers and firefighters diligently worked to rescue him while other officers arrested the driver who had fled the scene. Lorenzo suffered 3rd degree burns over a quarter of his body and has been in the hospital recovering since the incident. He received skin grafts for his burns and is currently receiving physical therapy to help him regain his strength.
Sgt. Thomas & Officer Wolski from the 2nd District were among the safety forces who responded to the crash, and in the aftermath, recognized the gravity of the family’s situation. They decided to reach out to Lorenzo’s mother, to arrange a visit with Lorenzo at the hospital. Learning that nearly all of Lorenzo’s belongings were destroyed in the crash along with much of the family’s possessions, Sgt. Thomas and Officer Wolski initiated a campaign for donations for the family. They bought Lorenzo toys of his favorite characters from Minecraft and Spider-Man and replaced a Nintendo Switch that was destroyed in the crash. Sgt. Thomas reached out to Onix Outreach who along with a private donor donated gift cards for the family for groceries and clothing and also donated new home furnishings to replace items destroyed during the incident including three new beds and three dressers that will be delivered to the family once they find a new home.
The Cleveland Police Foundation also donated to the family for any expenses they may incur.
Thank you to all of our community partners who make assistance initiatives like this possible. A very special thank you to Sgt. Thomas and Officer Wolski who went above and beyond the call of duty to touch this family as many Cleveland Police Officers do every day!
