While summer is a time for vacation and rest, many of us also have a “to do” list for these warm months and long days. It can be gratifying to complete a project or witness growth and progress, and frustrating when we encounter setbacks. In our spiritual lives, however, our "progress" is primarily a matter of our relationship with God rather than something that can be objectively measured—although we can experience the effects of greater peace, hope, and love in our lives as we grow. Because spiritual growth sometimes happens in the context of our struggles, it doesn't always look or feel like what we might expect of progress and success. Focusing on externals can become a distortion and a temptation to despair or judgment. This maxim reminds us that while outcomes are important, spiritual progress is not found primarily in what can be measured but in our deepening trust and awareness of how God's grace is at work in our lives.
