What is Sokol? Their program, Sokol, was based on the democratic principles of the ancient Greeks
and their idea of developing "a sound mind in a sound body".
The word “sokol” translates to "falcon" and is symbolic of the Sokol ideals: Courage, Strength, Endurance, Fraternalism, Love of Democratic Principles & Pride of Country. Last night we hosted the American Nationalities Movement and their Captive Nations event. Special guests include State Senator Jon Husted and Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne.
Some history about the movement and the event:
The American Nationalities Movement (ANM) is a Cleveland-based civic organization founded in 1959 by Ralph Perk, who later became Mayor of Cleveland. Designed as an umbrella organization for nearly 50 diverse ethnic and nationality groups, it was built to advocate for ethnic political representation, celebrate cultural heritage, and promote anti-communism.
The organization is well known for successfully lobbying President Dwight D. Eisenhower to sign the 1959 Captive Nations Week resolution. The ANM continues to host annual Captive Nations commemorations every July and regularly honors the cultural achievements of local ethnic communities. It is led by President Judge Ralph Perk Jr., carrying on the legacy of his father.
