It’s the first of October which means that spooky season is upon us! As the weather chills and the leaves change, why not come in and learn a thing or two about fencing? Make no bones about it, it’s a sport for all seasons and all people. If we can find a sword fit for a skeleton, we can find one for you. Come on in any time we’re open! Mr. Skellyman is dying to meet you.

Welcome to another latergram! Two events are featured in today’s latergram.

11/22/2024-11/24/2024 was the GRAFA Third Coast ROC in Grand Rapids, MI. Although only a few are pictured here, multiple Ravens flocked to our neighboring state to fence people from multiple states. Dan did double-duty fencing in both the men’s Div2 and Div1A epee events. Anson and Jeff also fenced in men’s Div1A and Amanda fenced in the women’s Div1A event. Our resident foilist, David, fenced in Div2 foil!

After the first of the year, only one Raven braved the winter to travel to the first fencing event of the year. 1/3/2025-1/6/2025 was the Kansas City January NAC where Jay fenced in the men’s Vet epee event! Also pictured is Biscuit hard at work. And who knew Godzilla was making stateside appearances in Kansas City??

Summer 2025 is coming to a close and boy, it sure was a hot one this year, huh? The fencing was still fast and furious in spite of the heat and we made it through with the help of none other than popsicles!

We plan on still working up a sweat throughout the rest of the year too so come in and feel the heat even in the chill of fall and winter! Walk-ins are always welcome and we’ve got plenty of popsicles to share! See you in the fall!

+It’s been a busy year and we’ve been busy fencing! We’ve been practicing, competing, and having a blast along the way. We’ve been so busy that we’ve forgotten to let everyone know about our sword-related adventures and accomplishments. To remedy that, we’re going to start a temporary series of “latergrams” to highlight what we’ve been up to the past year. We’ll still be here for more recent updates too so be sure to follow us to stay in the loop!
On 10/26/2024 a flock of sport-fencing Ravens went to Denison University for the 4th Annual Denison Open in Granville, OH. In Senior Men’s Epee, Anson, Dan, Lawrence, Jay, Jeff, and Zander all showcased their fencing skills and all placed in the top 75% of the group! Zander took home bronze by placing third in the event! Similarly, Michele, Amanda, and Ray all fenced in the Senior Women’s Epee event and all placed in the top 75% of the group! Ray took home gold by placing first! Excellent job to all the Ravens who fenced!

On the eve of World Fencing Day, we recognize and celebrate our volunteers. Whether they are there to provide coaching expertise, assist around the club to keep things tidy and in order, to provide emotional support during tournaments, helping to carry gear, or even just to make sure everyone is properly hydrated our volunteers are a key part of our fencing community. They offer up their time to support our fencing community which makes us stronger as a whole. We could not do what we do without you!

As we continue to Celebrate Fencing Week, we could not let the week pass without shining a spotlight on the armorers. Often behind the scenes, their knowledge and skills maintain, repair, and build the equipment that is necessary to fence. Without their knowledge and expertise, our equipment would be in shambles and so would we. Thank you for the neverending work of keeping our gear in safe, good working order!

Day three of Celebrate Fencing week focuses on officials! They are the keepers and enforcers of the rules to ensure that every bout is fair and everyone has good sportsmanship. Their job is not always easy but they do it with integrity and respect.

On the second day of Celebrate Fencing Week, we turn our attention to our coaches. Through their expertise, knowledge, support, and patience we are able to advance our skills in the world of fencing. Their dedication to the sport and their students serve as inspiration to grow and achieve our own definitions of success. Thank you for all that you do!
