Mary B. Grossman, (1879-1977,) Class of 1912
- 1912: earned her law degree from Cleveland Law School (now CSU College of Law.)
- 1918: was the second woman admitted as a member to the American Bar Association.
- 1923: just a few years after women gained the right to vote, became the first woman in America elected to a municipal court bench.

Judge Grossman continued to serve on the Cleveland Municipal Court for 36 years. Today, 11 of Cleveland’s 13 municipal judges are women – a testament to her legacy and the path she forged.

Judges of the Cleveland Municipal Court gathered recently to welcome back a piece of that history: a gavel once used by Judge Grossman that now rests in a court display case.

Judge Jennifer Kinsley sits on Ohio's First District Court of Appeals and brings 24 years of teaching constitutional and criminal law to CSU|LAW this term.

Her advocacy for marginalized clients has been featured by The Washington Post, NPR, and Oxygen, and she's a two-time Professor of the Year.

Introducing 2026 Hall of Fame Honoree Janet Burney ’79

Janet Burney is General Counsel and Deputy General Manager for Legal Affairs at the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority.

In 1998, she became the first African American female elected as Judge to the Juvenile Court bench in Cuyahoga County.

Following the US Supreme Court’s decision Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, Establishment Clause law is in a state of uncertainty. The 2022 ruling sidelined the Lemon test, the standard courts had used for decades to decide these cases, yet an entire generation of lawyers continues to advise their clients cautiously, as though Lemon still applied. What is the law, and where is it going?
