📚✨ I’m a Literacy Engagement Artist, and one of the reasons I chose to read Sulwe to our preschoolers is because research shows that children can notice racial differences and begin expressing racial preferences as early as ages 3–5.

That is why it is so important to expose young children to stories that affirm their identity, celebrate diversity, and teach self-love.

Today, our 3- and 4-year-olds were completely engaged in the story. They eagerly anticipated what would happen next, and connected with Sulwe’s journey in meaningful ways.

Through this powerful book, they learned about:

đź–¤ Self-acceptance
🤎 Loving all shades of Blackness
👨🏾‍👩🏾‍👧🏾 The importance of family support
✨ Recognizing their own beauty and worth

This is why literacy matters. Books are more than stories—they help children see themselves, build confidence, and develop a positive sense of identity.

These little people reminded me today that they are never too young to learn lessons about self-love, belonging, and celebrating exactly who they are.

Another one of my students passed her Reading OST test and I couldn’t be more proud of Halimah! 📚✨

Watching her growth this school year has been amazing. Not only did her reading fluency improve tremendously, but her comprehension skills became stronger and her handwriting showed major progress as well. She grew in confidence, focus, and her ability to express herself while reading and writing.

A huge shoutout to her mother, Maqsoodah, for being so dedicated and involved throughout the entire process. She consistently kept me informed on Halimah’s progress throughout the school year and always made sure she had everything she needed to be successful during our tutoring sessions. That kind of partnership truly makes a difference.

One thing that makes my tutoring services different is that I focus on building relationships with my students first. I understand that you have to CONNECT before you CORRECT. Children learn best when they feel seen, supported, encouraged, and safe enough to grow.

Now that summer is here, this is NOT the time to allow your child to fall behind due to the summer slide. Many students lose valuable reading skills over the summer months, and when school starts back up, they struggle to catch up.

I am available throughout the summer to help your child continue building a strong foundation in reading skills, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.

If you want your Pre-K through 4th grader to strengthen their reading skills and start the next school year ahead instead of behind, reach out to me today by visiting my website and clicking the FREE Reading Assessment.

Yes, I tutor online! Spots for summer tutoring are limited, and sessions are filling quickly. Don’t wait until the school year starts to realize your child needs support. Start now and give them the tools they need to succeed. 📖💛

One of the most rewarding parts of this journey is watching our children grow over the years and seeing the results of consistency, support, and strong literacy foundations.

I recently received a message from the parent of one of my students who is now a rising 4th grader. I’ve been working with her since kindergarten when she didn’t yet know all of her letters and sounds. Her mother was so excited to tell me that her daughter became the TOP performer on her 3rd grade class OST Reading Test! 🎉

Her mother, Sakinah, wanted to give me my flowers for being a guide throughout the years and helping her daughter build the strong foundational reading skills she needed to succeed. But I also have to give flowers right back to HER because parents play a major role in a child’s reading success.

Sakinah has ALWAYS made sure her daughter showed up present, prepared, and ready for every tutoring session. She understood that tutoring alone is not enough. She did the shadow work behind the scenes necessary for her daughter to become a strong reader. From reinforcing skills at home, making literacy a priority, staying consistent, communicating, and ensuring her daughter attended our ABC READ Reading Camps, she stayed committed to the process every step of the way. 👏🏾📚

This is what happens when parents and educators work together with the child at the center. Reading success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes patience, intentionality, consistency, and support from people who truly care.

Zariyah also regularly attended our ABC READ Reading Camps filled with engaging, enriching, and culturally responsive literacy activities that help cultivate a culture of literacy within the home and throughout our community.

I’m passionate about helping children master the 5 components of reading while also helping them ENJOY reading and build confidence in themselves as learners.

📚 Summer is the BEST time to get your child the reading support they need before the next school year begins. Don’t wait until your child is struggling academically to seek help. Let’s build those skills and confidence now!

I believe families should always feel informed, equipped, and confident when it comes to supporting their child’s reading journey—that’s exactly why I created my monthly ABC LEARN Tutoring newsletter.

It’s short, simple, and straight to the point—but packed with meaningful literacy support. Each month, my families receive helpful insights on the five components of reading, a writing prompt to keep their child thinking and creating, a word of the month to build vocabulary, and a Black history fact to educate and inspire.

I also include a list of five carefully selected books they can read with their children, because representation and access to great stories matter.

This newsletter was created with my families in mind—to be an additional layer of support beyond our tutoring sessions. Because building strong, confident readers doesn’t stop when the session ends… it continues at home. 💛

If you’re part of ABC LEARN Tutoring , just know—you’re never doing this alone.

Last summer, Leah came to me at just 4 years old—still learning her letters and figuring out how to write them. Fast forward to now, and the growth has been nothing short of amazing.

What made the difference? Consistency. Her parents showed up for her every single week, making sure she rarely missed her tutoring sessions—and it shows. Her writing has improved exponentially. It hasn’t even been a full year yet, and her work now looks like a first or second grader’s writing.

This is what happens when support at home and intentional instruction come together.

This is why I love what I do.

My students have been learning about prefixes, specifically un-, and today we put that learning into action. I read The Undefeated to them, and baby… it turned into a whole experience.

We took a walk down Black history lane, and they didn’t just sit and listen—they engaged.

Every time they heard a word with un- in it, they lit up:
“Unstoppable!”
“Unafraid!”
“Unbreakable!”

And here’s the part that got me… they started helping me read the book. Soon as they heard that un- sound, they were jumping in, calling the words out before I could even finish. That’s when you know it’s clicking.

They weren’t guessing. They understood what that prefix meant, and they were applying it in real time. That’s how you build strong, confident readers.

This is what happens when you connect foundational skills to powerful, culturally relevant texts. It’s not just reading—it’s understanding, confidence, and joy all in one.

If you’re a parent looking for one-on-one reading support for your child, whether in person or online, I got you. Let’s get your child to this level of confidence and excitement with reading.

ABC Learn Tutoring is out here doing the real work—and the impact is undeniable.

We’ve had the honor of supporting students in the Open Doors Academy program and those showing up every Saturday at AJ Rickoff’s Spark program. Week by week, we’re helping them build strong foundations in reading and writing, sharpening their fluency, and reminding them that they are more than capable.

And yes—we’re feeding minds and bodies. I brought in fresh blackberries so my students could enjoy something healthy and delicious while they learn. Because our babies deserve to be nourished in every way.

More than anything, our children need to feel us. They need to know we believe in them. They need to know we care.

One of my students gave me a hug at the end of the session… and that moment said everything. That was appreciation. That was trust. That was a child recognizing that someone showed up for them—and meant it.

Special thank you to Ms. Monica, founder of Inc You, for bringing my tutoring company together with two incredible Black women—E Denise Tutors and Ms. Tia Kline. Powerful, gifted, and committed to this work. Together, we’re pouring into our children across the city and helping them become confident, capable, and strong readers.

This is bigger than tutoring.
This is legacy work.
This is literacy as freedom.

Representation matters.

Since we’re in the month of Ramadan, many of our youth are fasting — showing discipline, commitment, and faith beyond their years. My student Samir, who is 12, is fasting this month. During our session, we were deeply engaged in a discussion about his passage on Frederick Douglass. He was focused, reflective, and making powerful connections.

Then I glanced at the phone and said, “It’s time to break our fast.”

He was able to break his fast right there with his tutor.

It may seem like a small moment to some, but it was not small at all. It was meaningful. It was affirming. It was connection.

Moments like these are an essential component of a child’s success.

The research has consistently shown that when a child has a teacher or tutor they can relate to — whether through faith, culture, or shared lived experience — they perform better academically, emotionally, and mentally. Why? Because connection builds confidence. And confidence fuels achievement.

When we talk about social-emotional learning, the heart of it is this: a child feeling seen, heard, welcomed, supported, and understood. When a child feels safe enough to be fully themselves, they show up differently. They engage differently. They believe differently.

Those are the confidence builders that lead to real outcomes.

I want our children to thrive — not just academically, but as whole human beings.

This is why every child who experiences an ABC Learn Tutoring session walks away believing they can.

5 key benefits to how playing charades can build literacy and language skills:
1. Builds Vocabulary
Acting out words pushes children to understand what a word means-not just recognize it.
2. Strengthens Oral Language Skills
Guessing, explaining, and discussing clues, encourages kids to speak in full sentences, ask questions, and clarify their thinking.
These are essential foundations for building communication and public speaking skills.
3. Improves Comprehension & Concept
Understanding
To act out a word, children must process its meaning deeply. This strengthens their ability to visualize, interpret, and make connections-key skills needed for understanding texts.
4. Encourages Expressive Language &
Confidence
Charades gives children a fun and creative way to express ideas without relying solely on words. This is especially powerful for hesitant readers.
5. Supports Storytelling & Sequencing
Skills
When charades includes story elements (characters, settings, or actions), kids practice sequencing events and retelling idea. These are skills that directly support reading and writing development.
