🧠 Learning to read is more than recognizing a letter—it’s about connecting sounds, symbols, and movement.

At ABC Learn Tutoring, I use multisensory activities to help students hear a sound, say it, identify its letter, and physically build it.

In this activity, my student:
👂 Listened to the letter sound
🗣️ Repeated the sound
👀 Identified the matching letter
🙌 Formed the letter with Play-Doh

Multisensory learning helps strengthen memory, reinforce the connection between sounds and letters, and make learning active and engaging. Hands-on activities give students meaningful ways to experience and remember foundational reading skills.

Before children can confidently read words, they need to know that letters represent sounds. 🔤📚

My new second-grade student is putting the pieces together—literally! 🧩 She matched each picture to its beginning letter AND had to produce the sound that letter makes.

Why is this so important?

Because strong readers need to quickly recognize letters, connect them to their sounds, and use those sounds to decode unfamiliar words instead of guessing.

Even in second grade, if the foundation has gaps, we go back and strengthen it. That’s how we move forward.

If your child is struggling to decode words, remember letter sounds, or read confidently, don’t wait and hope they catch up. Let’s get them the reading support they need ASAP.

I wanted to add something fun, interesting and exciting to my tutoring sessions, so I brought in the Spin the Wheel! 🎡📚

I thought I had some pretty good choices on there for my younger students—Be the Teacher, Choose a Brain Break Song, Pick a Book and a few other literacy-centered rewards.

Wellllll…my 6-year-old student Samiya was NOT impressed with my choices. 😂😂 She basically let me know, Ms. Sasha, we can do better than this! 🤣

Welp! I guess it’s back to the drawing board because clearly I need some more exciting options on that wheel! 😂

But there’s a method behind the fun. Adding games like Spin the Wheel to literacy sessions can:

🎡 Build motivation — Having something fun to work toward gives students another reason to stay engaged and put forth effort.

📚 Make literacy feel enjoyable — Reading instruction doesn’t always have to feel like “work.” Games help children connect learning with excitement, laughter and positive experiences.

🧠 Give students choice and ownership — Allowing children to spin, choose and sometimes lead gives them a voice in the learning process—and helps me learn what actually motivates THEM.

And apparently Samiya has already taught me my next lesson: Ask the kids what THEY want on the wheel! 😂

📚✨ Shouting out my dear literacy comrade, Ebony T. Donley! ✨📚

If you’re looking for a resource that helps children move beyond simply reading the words to actually understanding what they read, you need to check out Comprehension Matters by Ebony T. Donley! 👏🏾

This workbook is replete with engaging reading passages and thoughtful comprehension questions designed to help our children strengthen those critical reading skills. What I especially LOVE is how intentional Ebony was about including passages that highlight Black people, history, innovation, and excellence. 🙌🏾🖤

One passage highlights James West, the brilliant Black inventor who co-invented the electret microphone. His invention has become incredibly important in technology and is used in things like microphones, baby monitors, hearing aids, and so much more!

THIS is what culturally relevant literacy instruction looks like! Our children deserve to see themselves, their history, their brilliance, and their contributions reflected in the materials they use to learn. ❤️📖

And comprehension matters because we don’t just want children who can pronounce the words—we want children who can think critically, make connections, answer questions, explain their thinking, and understand the world around them.

🎲 What if a simple game could help your child become a stronger reader? 👀📚

At our table during the Back-to-School Event hosted by the East Cleveland Public Library, we had a literacy game focused on one of the most important building blocks of reading: phonemic awareness!

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the individual sounds in spoken words. It helps children understand that words are made up of smaller sounds that they can break apart and put back together.

And the best part? You can practice it through a simple game! 🎯

For example, ask your child:

👉 “What sounds do you hear in cat?”

They can break it down: /k/ /ă/ /t/.

No worksheets. No complicated materials. Just listening, playing, and practicing with words!

Why is phonemic awareness so important?

🧠 1. It builds a strong foundation for reading.
Children who can hear and manipulate sounds are better prepared to connect those sounds to letters when they begin decoding words.

📖 2. It helps children sound out unfamiliar words.
Instead of guessing, children learn to pay attention to the sounds within a word and use those sounds to figure it out.

✏️ 3. It supports spelling and writing.
When children can hear the individual sounds in words, they have a much easier time representing those sounds when they write.

This is why I believe literacy instruction should be both effective AND fun! ❤️📚
