š² What if a simple game could help your child become a stronger reader? šš
At our table during the Back-to-School Event hosted by the East Cleveland Public Library, we had a literacy game focused on one of the most important building blocks of reading: phonemic awareness!
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the individual sounds in spoken words. It helps children understand that words are made up of smaller sounds that they can break apart and put back together.
And the best part? You can practice it through a simple game! šÆ
For example, ask your child:
š āWhat sounds do you hear in cat?ā
They can break it down: /k/ /Ä/ /t/.
No worksheets. No complicated materials. Just listening, playing, and practicing with words!
Why is phonemic awareness so important?
š§ 1. It builds a strong foundation for reading.
Children who can hear and manipulate sounds are better prepared to connect those sounds to letters when they begin decoding words.
š 2. It helps children sound out unfamiliar words.
Instead of guessing, children learn to pay attention to the sounds within a word and use those sounds to figure it out.
āļø 3. It supports spelling and writing.
When children can hear the individual sounds in words, they have a much easier time representing those sounds when they write.
This is why I believe literacy instruction should be both effective AND fun! ā¤ļøš
And if your child struggles with hearing, identifying, or breaking apart the sounds in words, I can help!
At ABC LEARN Tutoring, I provide reading support designed to help children build the foundational skills they need to become confident readers.

I recently renewed my Orton-Gillingham certification, and Iām proud to continue investing in the knowledge and skills that help my students become confident readers.
As a reading tutor, I believe learning never stops. Continuing education ensures Iām using research-based methods that give children the best opportunity to succeedāespecially those who struggle with reading or have dyslexia.
Here are 5 benefits of working with a trained dyslexia tutor:
š 1. Structured, systematic instruction that builds reading skills step by step.
š¤ 2. Explicit phonics teaching so children truly understand how sounds and letters work together.
š§ 3. Multisensory learning that engages seeing, hearing, speaking, and movement to strengthen learning.
š 4. Individualized lessons tailored to your childās specific strengths and areas of need.
š± 5. Increased confidence as children experience real progress instead of frustration.
Every child deserves the chance to experience the joy and freedom that comes with reading.
If youāre looking for a dedicated Pre-K through 4th grade reading tutor who uses evidence-based instruction to help children become stronger, more confident readers, Iād love to help.

šāØ Iām a Literacy Engagement Artist, and one of the reasons I chose to read Sulwe to our preschoolers is because research shows that children can notice racial differences and begin expressing racial preferences as early as ages 3ā5.
That is why it is so important to expose young children to stories that affirm their identity, celebrate diversity, and teach self-love.
Today, our 3- and 4-year-olds were completely engaged in the story. They eagerly anticipated what would happen next, and connected with Sulweās journey in meaningful ways.
Through this powerful book, they learned about:
š¤ Self-acceptance
š¤ Loving all shades of Blackness
šØš¾āš©š¾āš§š¾ The importance of family support
⨠Recognizing their own beauty and worth
This is why literacy matters. Books are more than storiesāthey help children see themselves, build confidence, and develop a positive sense of identity.
These little people reminded me today that they are never too young to learn lessons about self-love, belonging, and celebrating exactly who they are.

Another one of my students passed her Reading OST test and I couldnāt be more proud of Halimah! šāØ
Watching her growth this school year has been amazing. Not only did her reading fluency improve tremendously, but her comprehension skills became stronger and her handwriting showed major progress as well. She grew in confidence, focus, and her ability to express herself while reading and writing.
A huge shoutout to her mother, Maqsoodah, for being so dedicated and involved throughout the entire process. She consistently kept me informed on Halimahās progress throughout the school year and always made sure she had everything she needed to be successful during our tutoring sessions. That kind of partnership truly makes a difference.
One thing that makes my tutoring services different is that I focus on building relationships with my students first. I understand that you have to CONNECT before you CORRECT. Children learn best when they feel seen, supported, encouraged, and safe enough to grow.
Now that summer is here, this is NOT the time to allow your child to fall behind due to the summer slide. Many students lose valuable reading skills over the summer months, and when school starts back up, they struggle to catch up.
I am available throughout the summer to help your child continue building a strong foundation in reading skills, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.
If you want your Pre-K through 4th grader to strengthen their reading skills and start the next school year ahead instead of behind, reach out to me today by visiting my website and clicking the FREE Reading Assessment.
Yes, I tutor online! Spots for summer tutoring are limited, and sessions are filling quickly. Donāt wait until the school year starts to realize your child needs support. Start now and give them the tools they need to succeed. šš

One of the most rewarding parts of this journey is watching our children grow over the years and seeing the results of consistency, support, and strong literacy foundations.
I recently received a message from the parent of one of my students who is now a rising 4th grader. Iāve been working with her since kindergarten when she didnāt yet know all of her letters and sounds. Her mother was so excited to tell me that her daughter became the TOP performer on her 3rd grade class OST Reading Test! š
Her mother, Sakinah, wanted to give me my flowers for being a guide throughout the years and helping her daughter build the strong foundational reading skills she needed to succeed. But I also have to give flowers right back to HER because parents play a major role in a childās reading success.
Sakinah has ALWAYS made sure her daughter showed up present, prepared, and ready for every tutoring session. She understood that tutoring alone is not enough. She did the shadow work behind the scenes necessary for her daughter to become a strong reader. From reinforcing skills at home, making literacy a priority, staying consistent, communicating, and ensuring her daughter attended our ABC READ Reading Camps, she stayed committed to the process every step of the way. šš¾š
This is what happens when parents and educators work together with the child at the center. Reading success doesnāt happen overnight. It takes patience, intentionality, consistency, and support from people who truly care.
Zariyah also regularly attended our ABC READ Reading Camps filled with engaging, enriching, and culturally responsive literacy activities that help cultivate a culture of literacy within the home and throughout our community.
Iām passionate about helping children master the 5 components of reading while also helping them ENJOY reading and build confidence in themselves as learners.
š Summer is the BEST time to get your child the reading support they need before the next school year begins. Donāt wait until your child is struggling academically to seek help. Letās build those skills and confidence now!

I believe families should always feel informed, equipped, and confident when it comes to supporting their childās reading journeyāthatās exactly why I created my monthly ABC LEARN Tutoring newsletter.
Itās short, simple, and straight to the pointābut packed with meaningful literacy support. Each month, my families receive helpful insights on the five components of reading, a writing prompt to keep their child thinking and creating, a word of the month to build vocabulary, and a Black history fact to educate and inspire.
I also include a list of five carefully selected books they can read with their children, because representation and access to great stories matter.
This newsletter was created with my families in mindāto be an additional layer of support beyond our tutoring sessions. Because building strong, confident readers doesnāt stop when the session ends⦠it continues at home. š
If youāre part of ABC LEARN Tutoring , just knowāyouāre never doing this alone.

Last summer, Leah came to me at just 4 years oldāstill learning her letters and figuring out how to write them. Fast forward to now, and the growth has been nothing short of amazing.
What made the difference? Consistency. Her parents showed up for her every single week, making sure she rarely missed her tutoring sessionsāand it shows. Her writing has improved exponentially. It hasnāt even been a full year yet, and her work now looks like a first or second graderās writing.
This is what happens when support at home and intentional instruction come together.

Yes I tutor in person and online.
This is why I love what I do.
My students have been learning about prefixes, specifically un-, and today we put that learning into action. I read The Undefeated to them, and baby⦠it turned into a whole experience.
We took a walk down Black history lane, and they didnāt just sit and listenāthey engaged.
Every time they heard a word with un- in it, they lit up:
āUnstoppable!ā
āUnafraid!ā
āUnbreakable!ā
And hereās the part that got me⦠they started helping me read the book. Soon as they heard that un- sound, they were jumping in, calling the words out before I could even finish. Thatās when you know itās clicking.
They werenāt guessing. They understood what that prefix meant, and they were applying it in real time. Thatās how you build strong, confident readers.
This is what happens when you connect foundational skills to powerful, culturally relevant texts. Itās not just readingāitās understanding, confidence, and joy all in one.
If youāre a parent looking for one-on-one reading support for your child, whether in person or online, I got you. Letās get your child to this level of confidence and excitement with reading.

ABC Learn Tutoring is out here doing the real workāand the impact is undeniable.
Weāve had the honor of supporting students in the Open Doors Academy program and those showing up every Saturday at AJ Rickoffās Spark program. Week by week, weāre helping them build strong foundations in reading and writing, sharpening their fluency, and reminding them that they are more than capable.
And yesāweāre feeding minds and bodies. I brought in fresh blackberries so my students could enjoy something healthy and delicious while they learn. Because our babies deserve to be nourished in every way.
More than anything, our children need to feel us. They need to know we believe in them. They need to know we care.
One of my students gave me a hug at the end of the session⦠and that moment said everything. That was appreciation. That was trust. That was a child recognizing that someone showed up for themāand meant it.
Special thank you to Ms. Monica, founder of Inc You, for bringing my tutoring company together with two incredible Black womenāE Denise Tutors and Ms. Tia Kline. Powerful, gifted, and committed to this work. Together, weāre pouring into our children across the city and helping them become confident, capable, and strong readers.
This is bigger than tutoring.
This is legacy work.
This is literacy as freedom.
