This is Argonauts 5th summer managing the Port of Cleveland's debris harvesting boats, Flotsam and Jetsam. Argonaut has two USGC qualified captains to run the boats, two Davis alums working as deckhands and mentors, and four Davis student interns working each summer to clear the river and harbor of large and small debris that may interfere with cargo ships and small pleasure craft. As we are working on the Ports mission to keep the waterway clear, we are also teaching our student interns how to use different types of machinery and about different jobs that they could pursue in the maritime industry after they graduate high school.
When Argonaut started this program in 2022 one of our first interns was a sophomore named Will Whalen. Will started off as a nervous intern soaking up all the information that he could. After Will graduated from Davis in 2023, he became a Deckhand for Flotsam and Jetsam and a mentor to students just like him. We are so excited to still have Will working with us on our 5th season but this year Will is our second captain!! After taking his captain class and test over the winter, Will received his 100-Ton Master Captain’s License this spring and is now running Flotsam four days a week still mentoring students.

The restoration continues on the Piper Warrior.
All landing gear struts have been resealed, new tires and inner tubes have been installed and the aircraft is finally back on the ground.
The students removed all four brake master cylinders, the parking brake master cylinder and fuel primer plunger. The parts were cleaned, inspected, resealed and reinstalled.
We have removed the cabin door and cleaned the old door seal including the baggage door seal in preparation of installing new door seals.
The wing tip fairings have been removed, the ELT has been removed and will be replaced.
Hyfast Aerospace has disassembled the engine and inspected all parts. Unfortunately there was more corrosion internally than originally expected including the crankshaft and accessory case gears. Although this is a setback, we know the engine will be much safer than it was when removed.
At this time we are at a stand still with the restoration as we wait on the engine to be repaired and the set of hoses that were ordered.
As we waited for parts on the Warrior, we started and finished the installation of the new interior on the Argonaut Cherokee. The old interior was removed, the glue removed from the floors and the rear seat recovered. We covered the front seats, installed new insulation, sidewalls and headliner.

They graduate to six figure salaries, and grueling work
Cadets from the nation's Merchant Marine academies are finding lots of demand and great salaries because of a shortage of licensed mariners.

This week Argonaut started work on our newly acquired Piper PA-28-151 Warrior.
This aircraft has been sitting since August 1990 at the Elyria airport. Three students, Jonathan, Genesis and Rafael, along with Aviation Instructor Ioannis Giagtzoglou are restoring the aircraft back to airworthy condition. The road ahead will be tough but the students are up to the task and are eager to work on the project while they learn how to be aircraft technicians.
They started off by inspecting the engine and finding the camshaft lobes rusted along with the lifters. The engine was removed and sent to HYFAST Aerospace LLC in Parma for repairs.
In the meantime we have opened up wing and fuselage panels, placed the aircraft on jacks, and removed the wheel assemblies. The wheel assemblies will be disassembled and inspected. All rubber hoses and tubes have been removed and will be replaced with new.
The goal is to have the aircraft flying before the students go off to college and A&P school this summer. Two of the students will be going to Legacy Aviation Learning Center and the third student is still undecided.
Please stay tuned for updates as we progress through this restoration project.

This past weekend Argonaut and Davis A&M’s first Drone Soccer Team, The Davis Football Club, attended the US Drone Soccer District III Championship. Led by Argonauts’ Devon Sheehy, the team came in second place with two overtime matches against the reigning champions. This victory means that The Davis Football Club is invited to the U.S. Drone Soccer 2026 National Championship in Daytona Beach, Fl at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
The U.S. Drone Soccer Association was created in 2022 to support STEM Education programs around the USA and help funnel students into Aviation Technology, Engineering, & Maintenance focused careers through engagement and personal growth through the program. Mr. Sheehy created our Argonaut/Davis team at the start of this school year. All the drones are built, programmed and flown by the team of students. The Davis Football Club is the only drone soccer team in the Cleveland area, and we are so proud of all the hard work from the students and Mr. Sheehy to get to this victory!

We are always excited to be working with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution but this time was extra exciting because we were able to involve one of our maritime students, Phoenix! Phoenix is a sophomore at Davis Maritime and Aviation High School and has been an Argonaut intern on the Goodtime III, Flotsam and Jetsam, and PHASTAR 2543 over the past two summers. He is also a member of Argonauts Maritime Club and the Davis Swim Club. This summer he will be an intern on one of Interlake Steamship ships for 60 days, learning about all the different positions on the ship and testing out what a career with Interlake would be like after his graduation!
Phoenix jumped on the opportunity to help deploy Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Autonomous Underwater Vehicle. This time Woods Hole was focused on testing the AUV’s ability to operate under an ice flow, before it all melts, for continuous winter water data. Our friends at Share the Riverr had an awesome interview with Owen from Woods Hole with a bunch of information about the AUV that you should check out (Link in the comments)! We can’t wait for the next adventure with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution!
