Looking for ways to help your child learn new skills, build confidence and become a leader? Want to connect them with opportunities to explore their interests and make a difference in their community?

You don’t have to find those opportunities alone. Alabama Extension 4-H specialists and agents like Angela Williams help young people learn by doing through hands-on experiences in STEM, agriculture, leadership and healthy living. From clubs and competitions to service projects, 4-H gives youth opportunities to practice responsibility, build friendships and develop skills they can use throughout their lives.

During National 4-H Week, we’re celebrating the specialists, agents and volunteers who help Alabama’s young people grow. Whether your child is ready to join or you’re interested in volunteering, your county Extension office can help you get started.

Shine a Light on Alabama After Dark!

Alabama After Dark: Meet the opossum!

When night falls, one of Alabama’s most misunderstood neighbors begins searching for its next meal.

The Virginia opossum is the only marsupial, or pouched mammal, native to the United States. These adaptable, nocturnal animals eat a varied diet that includes insects, rodents and carrion. By consuming these foods, opossums may help control damage to gardens and lawns while serving as part of nature’s cleanup crew.

Opossums are known for “playing possum,” but that is not usually their first response to danger. Most will try to escape. If cornered, they may hiss, growl or display their approximately 50 teeth.

They may look intimidating, but opossums rarely follow through on these defensive bluffs. They also have a remarkable resistance to many viruses and rarely contract rabies.

Blount County was well represented yesterday at the AJCA Fall Youth Field Day! Youth from Appalachian, Cleveland, JB Pennington, and Susan Moore took part! Thanks to Blount County Cattleman for supplying lunch and Bar V Genetics for hosting!

Don't forget our monthly competitive event this month is Photography! We have two different contests you can compete in: The World I See and The World I Imagine. The theme for this year is STEM. These will be due at your October Club Meeting. If you don't currently attend 4-H meetings and would like to participate, join us at our community club meeting on October 27 at the Blount County Multi-Purpose Center and bring your Photography contest entries if you want to participate!

Congratulations to all of our 4-H rabbit exhibitors for doing such a great job at our county 4-H rabbit show! The costumes were outstanding as always and everyone did a great job on showmanship. Congratulations to Doris Mae Gaines for winning Supreme Champion Showman and to Buttercup Abel for winning Reserve Champion Showman! Our best costume award went to Kynlee Brantley and honorable mention went to Buttercup and Jaxon Abel. Our Best Trick award went to Gavin Eads and his rabbit Butterfinger.

Congratulations to all of our participants in the 2026 Chick Chain Show and Auction. It was great to see your hard work, dedication and care for your birds put on display during the Blount County Fair. We’re proud of all of the participants and the effort you put into this project.
