A statewide program through the Mississippi State Department of Health is expanding access to substance use disorder care across all 82 counties, helping identify risks earlier, reduce barriers to treatment and bring support closer to home.

MSDH officials said the program allows clinicians to intervene sooner — often years before a person may typically seek specialty care — by using screenings and technology integrated into routine health care visits.

“This work reflects a simple principle: Substance use disorder care should be available earlier, closer to home, and as part of normal health care,” said Dr. Dan Edney, MSDH Executive Director and State Health Officer.

Following a successful six-county pilot program, the initiative is now active statewide. Patients identified as high risk can connect with addiction specialists through video visits, helping remove transportation barriers that often impact rural communities.

Health officials noted that overdose deaths in Mississippi increased sharply from 2020 to 2021, including a significant rise in fentanyl-related deaths. The program aims to improve access to care before individuals reach a crisis point.

MSDH is also exploring options to safely extend eligible treatment services into patients’ homes in the future.
