Jacob Runyan, an exercise science and math major, was awarded 2nd place at the Delta State University Research Poster Symposium - a university-wide research showcase where students develop a topic, collect data, execute an extensive literature review, analyze data, and present findings in front of peers and a faculty judging panel.

Jacob's research titled, "Mind Games: The Role of Cognitive State in Athletic Output and Perceived Effort" examined mental fatigue across various athletic modalities evaluating original data assessing what performance impairments are primarily driven by - an increased perception (psychological) of effort OR a physiological (physical) limitations.

The study results indicate that mental fatigue acts as a significant "psychological governor" rather than a purely physiological barrier. While the physical capacity of the athletes likely remains intact, their perception of effort is fundamentally altered. The evidence synthesizes toward a psychobiological model of athletic impairment. Performance limitations are primarily driven by psychological perception (increased effort and reduced willingness) rather than immediate physiological failure.

Jacob's research assistant and faculty advisor is Dr. Todd Davis, an Associate Professor in the Division of Sport & Movement Sciences

Congratulations, Jacob and Dr. Davis!
