Before Lake Keowee existed, this valley was home to the Cherokee town of Keowee—one of the most important Lower Towns in the Cherokee Nation—as well as Fort Prince George, a British frontier outpost built in 1753.

In 1971, the valley was intentionally flooded to create Lake Keowee for hydroelectric power and the nearby Oconee Nuclear Station. Today, the town, the fort, and generations of history remain beneath more than 300 feet of water in some places.
