Lakeshore Aikido

Lakeshore Aikido Lakeshore Aikido is a safe and supportive environment to study Aikido as a philosophical system and “Aikido is not a sport.

It is a discipline, an educational process for training the mind, body and spirit. Physical technique is not the true object, but a tool for personal refinement and spiritual growth.” - MITSUGI SAOTOME SHIHAN

Lake Shore Aikido is an affiliate of Aikido Schools of Ueshiba, founded by Mitsugi Saotome Shihan. Saotome Shihan was a 15 year uchi deschi (resident student) of the founder of Aikido, Morih

ei Ueshiba O’sensei. Our dojo maintains a philosophy true to O’sensei’s vision; Aikido is for everyone, young and old, weak or strong. Classes are taught with an emphasis on growth at an appropriate speed for the student. Connection and awareness are more important than acquiring a wide array of techniques. Our curriculum includes the use of open hand technique, staff (jo) and sword (bokken). We believe in the balance between integrity (martial reality) and spirit (moral behavior). Our physical practice helps us to develop the strength to become more aware and peaceful human beings

"Most people think about promotions and ranking in terms of rungs on a ladder. In fact, it's more like the expansion of a sphere."

Saotome Sensei, as recalled by Julie "Jet" Tollen

In our summer newsletter, Julie Tollen, one of the instructors at Tampa Aikido, wrote about what an Aikido promotion actually means. Not the technical checklist, but the inner work that leads up to a test, what the kanji on your certificate really say, and the traditional etiquette of receiving one.

Julie has penned thousands of names on ASU kyu certificates since 2015, and the essay includes a full translation and transliteration of a sandan certificate, something most of us have never seen written down.

The complete article is on the Tampa Aikido site:
