Dear Noble Families,

INSTEAD OF WALKING OUT, WALK UP!

As many of you may know, there is a movement to have students walk out of school on March 14th at 10:00 a.m., and stay outside for 17 minutes to show their respect for the 17 lives that were lost in the shooting in Parkland, Florida. The CHUH elementary principals collaborated and came up with WALK UP INSTEAD OF OUT to also show our respect on this day.

At Noble we have tied this activity into our reading of Wonder. If you and your scholar are keeping up with the reading schedule, you know that last night Auggie overheard a very hurtful comment about his appearance by someone whom he thought was a friend. The comment was so devastating to Auggie, that he stayed home from school the following day.

WALK UP INSTEAD OF OUT ACTIVITIES:

Throughout the day all teachers are being asked to briefly discuss this part of the book, with a focus on the power of BEING KIND.
Each Noble scholar will be given a sticker to wear that says I CHOOSE KIND.
Tomorrow Noble Scholars will also be encouraged to:
walk up to the scholar who sits alone at lunch and invite him/her to sit with their group of friends..
walk up to a new student, smile, and say “Hi!”
walk up to their teachers and thank them.
walk up to talk to someone whose appearance may be different from theirs.
walk up and talk to someone who has different views and get to know them.
We are hoping that by beginning this journey of kindness our scholars will learn how much we really have in common with one another and the powerful impact of a kind word.



FYI - We are connecting the WALK UP to Wonder and choosing acts of kindness, as a result we will not mention the events that took place in Florida as we know that this is a sensitive topic due to the young age of our Noble scholars.

A message from Principal Coleman:

Greeting Noble Families,

The following message is very important as it involves the safety and security of our students. During arrival and dismissal we have noticed several parents encouraging their scholars to run across the street to either enter the building or a waiting vehicle. These actions are very dangerous, but especially during the winter months when roads are icy and slick. Drivers of larger vehicles cannot see our little scholars as they hurry across the street, many times without even looking at the oncoming traffic, because they are attempting to follow the directions from their parents.

We are also reminding parents that we do not dismiss students from school after 2:45 unless it is an emergency. We are very cautious during our dismissal process to ensure that we document how and with whom students are leaving school grounds. Changing how your child is getting home without sufficient time to inform the teacher creates a security issue for the scholar and school. Last but not least if you, or an authorized person listed on the emergency blue card, are picking your scholar up early proper identification will be needed. Scholars will not be released to a person not being able to show identification. If you have any questions regarding this information please feel free to contact me.

***After School Intramural Classes Canceled***

A message from Principal Coleman:

Beginning Monday, January 29th, Mr. Wright, our physical education teacher, will be serving the district in a different capacity. During his absence the physical education classes will be covered by Ms. Wade, a certified physical education teacher who has experience working in the CH-UH school district. Due to Mr. Wright's absence, after school intramural classes will be canceled until further notice. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

We had a great meeting tonight! Thanks to everyone in attendance for excellent, thoughtful participation. We will post the meeting minutes, volunteer opportunities & other announcements soon, but I couldn't wait to share the schedule for the rest of this year's meetings, which we agreed upon tonight.

A couple changes:
1. We will now be meeting every month, so there are more opportunities for you to attend.
2. We will rotate between the second Thursday of the month (evenings) and the second Saturday of the following month (mornings). See list below for specific dates. We are hopeful that Saturday morning meetings will offer an option for those who can't make it on a weeknight.

Plans are also in the works for recording the meetings (who knows, we may even go LIVE on Facebook!) and offering childcare during the meetings. We may have some additional activities in conjunction with the November & December meetings - stay tuned!

Mark your calendars now for these upcoming meetings of the Noble School Community - we hope you will join us!
