This morning, our PreK class spent time caring for an important part of our neighborhood by helping restock the Heights Community Care Pantry.
The children helped unpack, sort, and organize items while we talked about how communities take care of one another. Together we added a variety of foods including PB&J kits, early eater kits with yogurt bites and applesauce, vegetarian taco kits with tortillas and plant-based filling, pancake kits with mix and syrup, school snack kits with granola bars and juice boxes, oatmeal, ramen, sandwich crackers, granola bars, shells and cheese, mac & cheese, and fresh fruit like apples and clementines. Cooper even contributed a couple boxes of dog treats for neighborhood pups.
By the time I was able to sit down to write this update, most of the food was already gone. We filled the pantry around 10:00 this morning, and by about 2:00 PM the majority of the items had been taken. What remained were a few snack items and the fruit.
This tells us that the need in our community is real.
Our intention with the Heights Community Care Pantry is to provide a meal or a few helpful items at a time for neighbors who may need a little extra support. We kindly ask that visitors take only what they need for today so the pantry can continue to support multiple families.
Unfortunately, we are not able to restock the pantry at a level that would support full grocery hauls each day. We are asking both our school community and our broader neighborhood to help us keep this a sustainable, shared resource by taking what you need and leaving what you can.
In the coming days, we will also be adding information inside the pantry about additional local food resources for anyone who may need more ongoing support than this small pantry can provide.
Families and community members who are able and would like to help keep this project sustainable are welcome to contribute toward pantry supplies. Donations can be sent through Venmo or Cash App $Heightscooppreschool, and we will use those funds to purchase additional pantry items.
