Outdoor play has become one of those parts of childhood we protect pretty fiercely at Maven. 🌱🤎

There are so many ways childhood has become cleaner, quieter, and more controlled. We want our students to have space to climb until they figure out where their bodies feel steady 🧗, dig until they discover what wet soil can do 🪴, ride bikes fast enough to learn when they need to slow down 🚲, and make the kind of mess that could never be planned on a worksheet. 😅
There is real developmental work happening in all of that.

They are building coordination and body awareness. They are making decisions. They are negotiating with friends. They are learning what feels challenging versus what feels unsafe. They are testing an idea, adjusting, and trying again. 💭✨

One small shift I love, both as an educator and a parent, is replacing the automatic “Be careful!” with questions like, “What do you notice?” or “What’s your plan?” 👀

It keeps us close without doing all of the thinking for them.

And yes, sometimes all of this learning happens knee-deep in mud. 😂🤎🌧️

We’re okay with that.

A book should not end when you close it. 📚🍂

At Maven, literature often serves as a conceptual anchor. We use high-quality texts to build vocabulary, background knowledge, and curiosity, then give students opportunities to investigate those same ideas through STEAM, observation, conversation, and real-world experience.

Tap the Magic Tree by Christie Matheson is especially beautiful for this because students are not passive listeners. They tap, rub, clap, count, predict, and help the tree move through the seasons. The story invites their bodies into the reading experience before we ever ask them to think more deeply about the science behind what they are seeing.

From there, we can go further.

Why do some trees lose their leaves while others stay green? 🌲🍁
What happens to chlorophyll as the days become shorter and colder?
Why do the colors that were seemingly hidden all summer suddenly appear?
What else changes around us as fall arrives?

These are big concepts, but young students are incredibly capable when information is presented in a way they can connect to.

The real beauty comes later, when they step outside and recognize what they have learned. A changing leaf is no longer simply “pretty.” It becomes evidence. They have language for what they are seeing and enough background knowledge to begin asking better questions.

In education, we talk about transfer, the ability to take learning from one context and apply it somewhere else. That is what we are looking for. Not simply, “Can you remember what we talked about?” but, “Can you recognize it when the world shows it to you?”

And this is something families can nurture at home without turning home into school. After reading together, try asking:

🍂 “Do you see anything outside that reminds you of our book?”
🔎 “What do you notice?”
💭 “Why do you think that happened?”
🌱 “How could we find out?”

Sometimes one good question is enough to turn a walk around the block into an investigation.

The book gives them language. The world gives them somewhere to use it. 🤎

Some of the best learning happens beyond the classroom.

Outside, students dig, carry, plant, observe, and work together. They notice things we could never plan for and come running when the world gives them something new to understand 🌱🐞

At Maven, outdoor learning is part of the school day because it gives ideas somewhere to become real. A lesson about plants becomes a seed pressed into the soil. A conversation about insects becomes a tiny creature held carefully in two hands. The world becomes another teacher.

This is the kind of learning we hope they remember, with a little mud on their boots and wonder still following them home 🤎🌿

The booklet is what you see. The real accomplishment is everything it took to get there.

During our short u unit, students focused on the -ug ending. They listened for each phoneme, mapped the sounds, blended the words, and then applied what they had learned to an interactive Maven Reading Odyssey decodable reader.

By tracing the text and matching each picture to the word it represents, our little learners created a completed book they could read, understand, and proudly take home 📖✂️

This is one piece of the Reading Odyssey curriculum we have been developing. The goal is not to give students a bank of words they recognize simply because they have seen them before. It is to help them understand how our language works well enough to approach unfamiliar words with independence.

Once one pattern becomes familiar, it unlocks access to many more words. Those words become sentences. The sentences become stories. Through our Humanities coursework, those stories become questions, ideas, characters, and entire worlds they can enter for themselves.

First, they learn the code. Then, they unlock the magic hidden inside the books they love 📚✨ #

🌍For Earth Day, we wanted students to see the earth not just as a planet they live on, but as something they know, value, and protect.

We’re reading My Friend Earth by Patricia MacLachlan, illustrated by Francesca Sanna, which invites students to acknowledge the world around them. It teaches care, stewardship, and the idea that something beautiful and life-giving deserves our attention and protection. The Lion Inside turns us inward, asking students to consider courage, self-belief, and the quiet kind of strength it takes to find your voice, especially on topics like protecting the earth. 😊🌱

Students created their own portraits of the earth, surrounding it with hands of many shades and placing a heart at the center.

That idea is continuing through the week as students practice sorting metal, plastic, glass, paper, and compost among other projects. They are learning that caring for the earth is not abstract. It looks like daily choices. It looks like attention. It looks like responsibility.

We recently started our own compost bin, and each day students help fill it with leaves, grass, paper, and leftover fruit from snack.

At Maven, we want students to understand that the earth is not separate from them. It is something they belong to and something they are capable of caring for.

Children know when their work is real.✨

In our 🌱 garden, students are learning how plants grow, how gardens function, and how one part of an ecosystem can support another. They are using wheelbarrows, rakes, and shovels with purpose. They are learning about seedlings, soil, and even the plants that help protect other plants from insects.

This is what meaningful early education can look like.
Students who are trusted with real tools, real responsibility, and real learning tend to rise to meet it.

At Maven, we want students to leave with more than memories. We want them to leave with knowledge, confidence, and a relationship with the natural world.

Two friends. One tower. A whole lot of learning happening at once 🧱✨

At this age, play is socialization. When our little learners build side by side, they’re not just stacking blocks. They’re practicing eye contact, turn-taking, problem-solving, and the language that goes with it. National early childhood experts note that playing and learning together helps young kids grow social skills, language, and self-control all at the same time.

Research on high-quality early childhood programs also shows that smaller groups and lower student-teacher ratios are linked to stronger language, thinking skills, and social behavior, because teachers can notice and support each interaction more closely.

Here, we value small groups, supported teachers, and a classroom where students can practice being with one another in real ways: sharing space, sharing materials, and slowly learning how to share themselves.

These moments look simple. Developmentally, they’re anything but. 🌱

Teaching Empathy & Fairness: The Little Red Hen
Helping Hands + Fair Shares 🥖

The Little Red Hen gave us clear language for empathy and fairness. The hen did all the work. Her friends chose not to help. When the bread was ready, they wanted a slice, but they had refused to contribute. Students noticed how that might feel, and why missing out is a natural consequence in this story.

To bring that lesson to life, we baked bread together.
We talked about effort, helping, and what feels fair.
Students measured and counted scoops 🥣
They mixed, observed changes, and watched ingredients transform in the oven.

This is the beauty of interdisciplinary learning. Humanities, math, and STEAM wove together so students could truly make meaning of the concepts we emphasize.

By the end, everyone had helped.
And everyone shared the bread. 🍞
