What happened to being able to solve a problem correctly and moving on to the next problem?โฃ
โฃ
Why are kids having to explain their thinking so often?โฃ
โฃ
There are really two parts to this.โฃ
โฃ
1๏ธโƒฃst, when students explain their answer, it helps the teacher or parent know what they were thinking to get the answer.โฃ
โฃ
Far too often students have the correct answer and actually are solving completely wrong, just guessed, copied their neighbor, got lucky, and so on! โฃ
โฃ
We donโ€™t want to praise the correct answer when there was no thinking behind it & the child has no idea how to actually do the math.โฃ
โฃ
Having students explain their thinking allows us to catch those mistakes and help the students that need help and are really good at covering it up.โฃ
โฃ
2๏ธโƒฃnd, having students explain their reasoning or justify their answer, helps them understand their own thinking and helps them catch their own mistakes.โฃ
โฃ
I cannot tell you how many times a student has an โ€œahaโ€ moment while explaining to me what they did. They are smart and they know how to solve. They often make silly mistakes or have a fumble in their reasoning. โฃ
โฃ
Justifying their work helps them to find those mistakes on their own and learn from them without being or . They learn and remember much more when they discover things on their own!โฃ
โฃ
So, next time your child rolls their eyes when they are asked to explain, help them see that it does not have to be a paragraph long, or a difficult task.โฃ
โฃ
Justification is there to help them think deeper and to ensure they really understand the math!โฃ

A big shift in math is the discussion.โฃ
โฃ
Students often discuss their thinking before, during and after a problem.โฃ
โฃ
Discussion is key because it allows children to verbalize their thinking to others and hear othersโ€™ thinking.โฃ
โฃ
It allows them to then analyze othersโ€™ thinking along with their own and make sense of it, reason about it, and decide what makes sense, how it makes sense, and how they could adjust their own thinking. โฃ
โฃ
Students usually learn best from each other. They have a way of explaining things to each other that makes so much more sense to them.๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿผโฃ
โฃ
The discussion a class can have allows this to happen.โฃ
โฃ
When we were doing 25 of the same kinds of problems over and over again, there was no discussion. We were either doing 25 problems correctly, or we were doing 25 problems incorrectly.โฃ
โฃ
Now, students can begin a problem with some discussion to get them thinking. They can then think on their own, use models, and struggle and strive. Then, they have another support of their peers and their teacher through more discussion.โฃ
โฃ
All this talking is not providing too much support though! By no means does this dumb-down the process. Instead, it is pushing students to think more critically, take their time, and learn from each other. โฃ
โฃ
It also allows all students to feel successful and confident! This is key because students who do not feel successful and confident donโ€™t enjoy learning, and therefore often struggle.โฃ
โฃ
In my program I made sure I built in an opportunity for my students to discuss their thinking! Each month, we have a tutoring call to solve problems together and ask questions. Students will collaborate to deepen their understanding and to adjust any misunderstandings they have.โฃ

Whatโ€™s new about math?โฃ
Part 3: Strategies and Modelsโฃ
โฃ
Students use ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ to think about math in their head. Then, they use ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜€ to show that math on paper.โฃ
โฃ
But, why do they learn so many models? Isn't it more confusing for them?โฃ
โฃ
Simply put models allow:โฃ
โ€ขconfidenceโฃ
โ€ขthem to show and explain their thinkingโฃ
โ€ขreasoningโฃ
โ€ขall students to be successful on any given math taskโฃ
โ€ขthem to reason about othersโ€™ thinkingโฃ
โ€ขthem to see and learn from mistakesโฃ
โ€ขfreedomโฃ
โฃ
Models build their ability to make sense of numbers & problems, understand operations, use reasonableness, see patterns, and more!โฃ
โฃ
Models help students SEE the numbers in a variety of ways. They make math more concrete. โฃ
So, what exactly are models?โฃ
It is basically how they can show their work on paper.โฃ
โฃ
โ€ขConcrete (hands-on) objectsโฃ
โ€ขActing out the problemโฃ
โ€ขPictures (models)โฃ
โ€ขNumber linesโฃ
โ€ขEquationsโฃ
โ€ขRules and patternsโฃ
โ€ขNumber bondsโฃ
โ€ขTens framesโฃ
And so many more! It is ANY way that a student can write down what they are thinking.โฃ
โฃ
Next time your child is learning yet another way to model their thinking, remember, it is helping students see how they can show their thinking.โฃ
โฃ
Several students could use the same strategy to solve but may model it in different ways.โฃ
โฃ
This is part of the beauty of math! There are many ways to arrive at the same answer. Gone are the days of watching the teacher do something and then doing that same thing 25 times or more until you have it memorized! โฃ
Hallelujah, our children get to think and learn in their own unique way that makes sense to them๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ!โฃ
โฃ
Do you need help understanding all the strategies and models?โฃ

โฃ
Parents are frustrated while helping their child with math. This series intends to explain what is new about math so parents can better understand how math is being taught today.โฃ
โฃ
Many teachers use math tasks.โฃ
โฃ
This is one problem that students will work on through a math period. โฃ
โฃ
Math tasks should be โ€œlow floor, high ceilingโ€. This means two things:โฃ
โฃ
โฌ‡๏ธ Low floor = There are many โ€œentry pointsโ€ to the problem. This allows students of varying current ability to begin working on the problem in some way.โฃ
โฃ
โฌ†๏ธ High ceiling = the problem can extend to high levels. This means students that work faster or are more advanced in their mathematical thinking will not get โ€œboredโ€ quickly or finish too fast.โฃ
โฃ
The point of the math task is not only to allow all students to be able to work toward solving while still challenging those who need it, but also to provide an opportunity for rich, deep mathematical discussions.โฃ
โฃ
During discussion, teachers will call on particular students in a particular order based on what they saw them completing. โฃ
โฃ
Students will be asked to explain their own reasoning, examine each othersโ€™ reasoning and justify. They will be asked to think deeply and critically not only about their own work, but about othersโ€™.โฃ
โฃ
This discussion is where the magic happens. Oftentimes this leads to students discovering or uncovering a pattern, rule, definition, or idea about math. Students not only now know the new knowledge, but they understand it.โฃ
โฃ
When done correctly, the students are leading most of the conversation.โฃ
โฃ
Whoever is talking the most is doing the most learning.โฃ
โฃ
So, next time you are helping your child with math, I want you to remember one thing: who is doing most of the talking?โฃ

Part 1: The math itself is not new at all.โฃ
โฃ
What is new is the way we teach and learn math.โฃ
โฃ
Students are now encouraged to:โฃ
๐Ÿค“Think deeply about mathโฃ
๐Ÿค“Find patterns on their ownโฃ
๐Ÿค“Describe and justify their understandingโฃ
๐Ÿค“Examine the reasoning of othersโ€™ thinkingโฃ
๐Ÿค“Determine how they can apply patterns, rules or strategies to new situationsโฃ
๐Ÿค“Approach problems with an open mind and a multitude of strategies they can useโฃ
โฃ
I KNOW it is difficult for us as parents!โฃ
โฃ
I am an expert in 3rd grade math, but let me tell you that 1st grade math my son is doing is NO JOKE!โฃ
โฃ
Like, excuse me?! We are just in 1st grade, arenโ€™t we?โฃ
โฃ
They are 6 for goodness sake!โฃ
โฃ
But, I must digress, because I know what he is learning is building up to what I teach and far beyond that. โฃ
โฃ
There is a valid argument that what is being taught at young ages can be developmentally inappropriate for young learners, but aside from that, the deep critical thinking they are doing is invaluable.โฃ
โฃ
So, letโ€™s begin this year embracing the โ€œnew mathโ€ and learning how to help our children positively, rather than aiding them in hating math by bad-mouthing it ourselves. โฃ
โฃ
I am building Math Masters Online Kids Academy to help parents and children alike embrace math, build confidence, and improve their grades. It is time children feel ready for the next grade level of math and beyond! I build the foundation they need in 3rd grade.โฃ

The true history of math is that it isnโ€™t all that new. My favorite resource for this is an ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ timeline (like the pun) done by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) to mark their 100 year anniversary (https://www.nctm.org/100timeline/).โฃ
โฃ
On this timeline youโ€™ll find a 1951 event marked as the โ€œOrigin of New Mathโ€.โฃ
โฃ
Then a 1958 group explains โ€œmathematics as a rich subject that is timeless yet ever changing.โ€โฃ
โฃ
Finally, in 1960, โ€œNew Math Emergesโ€ and NCTM states it โ€œemphasize the importance of understanding the mathematics being learned, mathematical structure, reasoning, and problem solving.โ€โฃ
โฃ
So, what does this all mean?โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸพNew math isnโ€™t that new.โฃ
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸพWhat we view as โ€œnew mathโ€ is truly a GOOD thing!โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ Students now can not only DO the math, but they can understand and reason with it. They are not regurgitating what they were taught, but they are using their own thinking to figure things out and making mathematical sense out of situations.โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฟ The goal is to build more mathematically competent and confident students that can compete in the many highly mathematical fields now available. โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿป The trouble is that many parents do not feel confident in helping their child with this new math. We can clearly see this frustration in Mr. Incredible. โฃ
โฃ
But, what did he do? He studied and learned it. He worked hard to figure it out. โฃ
