Welcome to the page of the Clemson Faculty Senate! This page exists to help us better serve our constituents, the faculty of Clemson University. Acting as a sort of public forum for the Faculty Senate, this page will provide information, facilitate conversations about the Faculty Senate, and, hopefully, encourage a stronger Clemson community. I’d like to take a moment to draw your attention to a few aspects of this page. First, we’ll be announcing meetings and other events one week before the event and then the day before. Look for exciting new ways to be involved with the Faculty Senate this year. Second, every month we will be giving away an item of Faculty Senate paraphernalia to a fan of the page. Finally, we will be posting regular polls to gather feedback from Clemson faculty. We’ll also be posting photo directories of officers and members, and photos from Senate events. I’m excited about the opportunities that this page provides the Senate, and I’m looking forward to the 2013-14 session.

Meet Dr. Kelly Best Lazar, an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in Engineering & Science Education and Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences. After first coming to Clemson as a postdoctoral researcher in January 2016, Dr. Lazar has now been part of the Clemson community for more than 10 years.

Dr. Lazar became involved in Faculty Senate to learn more about how the University works and better understand the systems that impact her, her students, and her department. She says that experience has already proven valuable.

As a Lead Senator, one of her priorities this year is continuing to improve communication between Faculty Senate and the many groups it serves, especially faculty. She wants faculty to know what Faculty Senate is working on and how they can reach out when they have questions or concerns. As Dr. Lazar puts it, “Faculty Senate is here to help.” Even when senators may not immediately know the answer, they will work to find one.

Outside of Clemson, Dr. Lazar loves escape rooms and says Greenville has some of the best in the country! She also enjoys traveling and reading and is currently trying to finish a book before its movie adaptation comes out next month.

One of Dr. Lazar’s favorite parts of Clemson is working with faculty, staff, and students who care about each other and want to leave places better than they found them. She especially enjoys seeing Clemson students go on to make a difference and hearing what they have been up to when they return to visit.

We’re excited to spotlight Dr. Lazar and learn more about the Faculty Senators serving Clemson this year!

Meet Ally Driver, a lecturer of public health in Clemson’s Department of Public Health Sciences and Lead Senator for the College of Social and Behavioral Health Sciences.

Now in her third year at Clemson, Ally teaches many first-year students in Introduction to Public Health, along with courses on health theory and how health theories can be used to improve health outcomes. She also serves on the Scholastic Policies Committee and as the Faculty Senate representative on the Athletic Academic Oversight Committee.

Ally became involved in Faculty Senate because of her longstanding interest in governance and finding ways to help. After being involved in governance earlier in her education, she was excited to run for Faculty Senate and find ways to improve the lives of faculty, staff, and students while also connecting with faculty across colleges and departments and learning more about how Clemson works.

This year, she hopes to grow her understanding of issues affecting faculty and how university policies impact both faculty and students. Through the Scholastic Policies Committee, she hopes to bridge the gap between faculty and students by helping develop policies that improve both teaching and the student experience.

Outside of Clemson, Ally is a yoga instructor at Soulshine. After growing up dancing, she turned to yoga as a new outlet and eventually completed her teacher training. What began as an interest in fitness grew into an interest in the physical, mental, and social benefits of yoga. She is also incorporating that interest into her doctoral research, where she is studying breast cancer patients and hopes to explore how yoga could support their physical and mental well-being.

One thing Ally wishes more people knew about Faculty Senate is how accessible it is. Faculty Senate meetings are open, and members of the Clemson community can have their voices heard by attending meetings or connecting with senators in their department or lead senators. Ally loves that at Clemson, faculty can have their voices heard because she believes that collaboration can help make the Clemson experience better for everyone.

Meet Dr. Chris Norfolk, Principal Lecturer and Undergraduate Program Coordinator in Clemson’s Department of Chemical Engineering and the Lead Senator for the College of Engineering, Computing, and Applied Sciences.

His involvement in the Faculty Senate began when he discovered lecturers were not allowed to serve or have a voice at Faculty Senate meetings. He became involved with the Convention of the Delegates, which worked to improve the university experience for faculty who were not represented by the Faculty Senate. He was part of the effort that led to the reunification of the faculty and changes to the University Constitution that included teaching faculty in the definition of faculty.

He wants the Clemson community to understand that change is possible, even when it takes time. During his years involved in faculty governance, he has seen changes to the Faculty Senate Constitution. As Dr. Norfolk put it, “the battleship moves slowly and it turns slowly,” but important work affecting day-to-day lives of faculty, staff, and students begins through faculty governance.

This year, Dr. Norfolk hopes to learn through his work in the Faculty Senate while taking on his new role as Undergraduate Program Coordinator and continuing his work as a professional engineer. Outside of his work at Clemson, Dr. Norfolk has a passion for brewing mead and has won several medals for his creations. This Spring, he will be bringing some of his expertise to a new B**r class!

For Dr. Norfolk, one of the most meaningful parts of being at Clemson is being part of an organization whose core mission is to improve people’s lives. He believes “making life and the world a better place is a good use of a life.”

We’re excited to spotlight Dr. Norfolk and learn more about the Faculty Senators shaping Clemson this year!

Exciting Announcement! 🌟 We are bringing back the Faculty Senate Senator Spotlight each month, and we’re excited to kick it off with Senator Wang! With Faculty Senate transitions happening tomorrow, it’s the perfect time to highlight his continued dedication and impact within the Senate as he continues his service.
Meet Senator Wang from the College of Business. Senator Wang plays an active role in shared governance by attending monthly Senate meetings and engaging closely with colleagues to better understand and represent their ideas, perspectives, and concerns. He is committed to strengthening the connection between faculty and leadership through collaboration and open dialogue.
Senator Wang’s research focuses on machine learning and artificial intelligence, with a special emphasis on how these technologies shape the behaviors, values, and decision making of younger generations like Gen Z and Gen Alpha. His work explores online shopping trends, personality insights, and predictive modeling to better understand a rapidly evolving digital world.
Inspired by his decade long journey at Clemson, Senator Wang was motivated to get involved in shared governance to give back to a community he deeply values. He views the Faculty Senate as a platform to promote transparency, collaboration, and accountability during a time of rapid change in higher education.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Senator Wang’s service has been gaining insight into how decisions are made across the university while collaborating with faculty from diverse disciplines. This has broadened his perspective and strengthened his commitment to contributing meaningfully to the institution.
Outside of his professional work, Senator Wang enjoys reading and hiking. He aims to read a book each month to stay open minded and continuously learn, while hiking allows him to recharge, think creatively, and enhance his problem solving skills.
The Faculty Senate is grateful for your service, Senator Wang! 👏
