"Hang out with people who fit your future."

BGSA is devoted to providing much-needed spaces to network within the Black community on campus...and at large.

We not only seek professional development but promote the ability for black grads at Clemson to breathe and find others they can relate to.

Here are highlights from our most recent events/outings.

President - Lora Alatise

“Heyyyyyy, I’m Kharimat Lora Alatise but everyone calls me Lora!

I’m a 3rd year PhD student in Bioengineering (yeah I know another one 😂). I wish I had a fancy title for what I study but I don't yet. I’m investigating the delivery of nucleic acids via peptide-based nanomaterials in 3d ovarian cancer models to treat drug resistance.

I wanted to be a part of BGSA because I couldn’t see myself thriving without community. Yes, we may have our communities that existed before we got here but creating one while being here is essential!

As President this year my goal is to not only lead, but to serve you all — that is what BGSA is for. I hope you can find community with us. If you see me don’t be shy!”

Vice President - Maurice Williams Jr.

“Greetings! I am Maurice from Charleston, SC. Currently I am a PhD Candidate in the Educational Leadership (Higher Education) program and serve as a graduate assistant in the educational and organizational leadership development department in the College of Education.

My hobbies include: great conversation, traveling, sports, music, and dancing.

As the Vice-President of BGSA I plan to serve as a supportive voice for Black graduate students and champion Black initiatives at Clemson. 🙌🏾”

Secretary - Britney Hudson

“Hi BGSA! My name is Britney Hudson, a 4th year graduate student in Bioengineering.

My research looks at the biomechanics of a diseased bladder and how this relates to its pathology.

I serve as the secretary for BGSA and look forward to meeting you at our meetings and events!”

Treasurer - Joba Adisa

“Hi everyone, I’m ‘Joba Adisa, a second year graduate student in the Learning Sciences Ph.D. program at Clemson and I’m glad to be a part of the black graduate student community and it’s executive board.

I’m interested in critical data literacy among youths, learning design and am always up for having some fun!”

Historian - Marissa Davis

“Hello, all. My name is Marissa Davis. I am a second-year master's student in the History department here at Clemson, studying Southern History, African and African American experiences in the American South, Food History, and the Digital Humanities.

My current research questions the existence of a Southern Identity in comparison to the most everyday aspect of Southern Culture, our food.

I choose to be a part of BGSA as I believe in the need for community among black students here at Clemson.

I serve as the historian for BGSA and hope to capture its essence via documentation and our social media platforms.“

I’m a second year PhD student in the Bioengineering department and my research focuses on Breast cancer and intercellular communication.

I joined BGSA my first year, met amazing friends, and wanted to continue this year to help foster community in BGSA.”
