We are proud to celebrate the generosity of Thom Penney and Gretchen Penney in support of global engagement opportunities for students at Clemson University.
Thom is a valued trustee and past president of the Clemson Architectural Foundation, and we are grateful for the lasting impact he and Gretchen continue to make for Clemson students.š
After experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency while traveling overseas, Clemson alumni Gretchen and Thom Penney turned a moment of crisis into an act of generosity. Their experience inspired them to establish a new fund at Clemson University that supports global engagement opportunities for students.
The fund will help Clemson students pursue international experiences that broaden perspectives, strengthen leadership skills and create meaningful connections across cultures.
Through their gift, the Penneys hope more students will gain the life-changing experiences that come from learning and engaging around the world. š

⨠STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - MELISSA SANTJER āØ
Hi, my name is Melissa Santjer. I am a graduate student in my second year of the MArch1 program. I grew up on a horse farm in Chesapeake, Virginia. After high school, I moved to Harrisonburg, VA, with my horse, Remi, to complete my undergraduate at James Madison University. Trail riding and hiking are two of my favorite pastimes. After graduation, I knew I wanted to continue my education and become a licensed architect. Remi and I packed our bags to start our next adventure at Clemson University. Once at Clemson University, my boyfriend and I adopted our newest hiking buddy Binx. Though my little family couldnāt join me on my adventures in Genoa, I have loved my time here, making new friends and exploring Europeās Architecture, culture, and nature.
My favorite part is being able to take off to explore somewhere new each weekend whether itās taking a walk in Genoa, a day trip to a new city, or a over nighter in a new country. So far iāve visited Portofino, Malta, Florence, Naples, Pompeii, Rome, Vatican City, Milan, Turin, Varenna, Menaggio, Bellagio, Lenno, and Como!
