Join Clemson Extension Forestry and Wildlife Agent Robert Carter, Ph.D., author of Catawba Nation Ethnobotany, for a lecture, discussion and field activities focused on Piedmont savannahs, slate belt communities and floodplains.

This class begins with a lecture and discussion followed by field activities in the Piedmont with special emphasis on the Catawba Nation to include Piedmont savannah, slate belt, and floodplains. The lecture/discussion will cover the primary natural communities of the Carolina Piedmont with a focus on the geologic, soils and topographic features of each community that create the unique suite of plants and animals. The environmental gradients will be observed based on changes in plant composition and factors such as soil depth, slope position, and aspect.
