Shoutout to Dr. Takacs, Hunter Staiger, Kai Tucker, and Matthew Bertagna for carrying out exploratory measurements using a mini-EBIT and a transition-edge-sensor microcalorimeter. They also connected with former students, Brooke Henry and Matthew Everette!
More about what happened:
This group also worked with a NIST scientist, Jonathan Dean. These measurements are part of an emerging collaboration aimed at determining the nuclear charge radius of thorium, which is directly relevant to the development of the thorium-229 nuclear clock. This system is of particular interest because of its potential for ultra-precise timekeeping and sensitivity to fundamental physics, including possible variation of the fine-structure constant. They also visited JILA to learn about the current status of the most advanced thorium nuclear clock efforts.
