Tsaritsyno Palace '14 02/19/2014

(Slideshow Below) Last weekend, Ashley Sutton took one of our Clemson students and another professor to one of Moscow's most scenic venues, Tsaritsyno Palace (pronounced like Czar-it-seeno). This beautiful palace was built for Czarina Catherine the Great so she could have a home in Moscow, since she lived in St. Petersburg. Sadly, it was not finished before she passed away and was never completely finished until the early 2000s when the mayor of Moscow provided millions to complete the project. A wise investment!

Ирония судьбы, или С легким паром 1 серия 12/31/2013

If you want to get in the New Year's mood in Russian-style, watch the New Year's Russian classic, Irony of Fate (with English subtitles) at this site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVpmZnRIMKs&wide=1

If you decide to watch, the opening of the movie is animated for a couple of minutes but just enjoy the music and the movie will begin soon after... it is a great movie so I strongly suggest it for anyone. Some American critics compare this movie to the 1960 American classic, "The Apartment," with Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon. Many Russians watch this movie every year during their New Year's Celebrations.

Russian/French /Recruits at Table Rock State Park — October 26, 2013 10/27/2013

Yesterday, we held a cookout for the Russian/French student visitors from Clemson's Russian-American Study Abroad Program at Table Rock State Park in upstate South Carolina. Students from the 2013 class held in Moscow as well as other past classes attended and we invited those that are planning to participate in the program this coming spring. One of the Professors that teaches for the program each year, Dr. Dennis Buffington, flew down from Penn State just to spend time with many of this past students. A special thanks to Olga Layfield and Lyudmila Averianova for all of the hard work they put into preparing the food, including the wonderful Shashlik that Lyudmila marinated and cooked. Marcus and Catrina Pollard and their family came over from Georgia. Marcus taught for us in the program the past two years and he and his family hosted the Russian/French students the past week. Marcus brought his corn hole board game and the students also played some great football before we wound up with pictures over at the waterfall behind the Nature Center at Table Rock. We had a wonderful day! Thanks to everyone that helped make this a special day!

Russian/French Students Visit Stumphouse Tunnel & Isaquena Falls — October 17, 2013 10/27/2013

Earlier this week, the Russian/French student visitors toured one of upstate South Carolina's historic sites that includes a wealth of natural beauty, Stumphouse Tunnel & Isaqueena Falls. Stumphouse tunnel is a train tunnel that was in development prior to the civil war to connect Knoxville and Charleston but a lack of funds due to the war stopped its construction. In the 50s, Clemson purchased the tunnel to use in processing the extremely popular blue cheese. Later, Clemson handed the management of the tunnel over to the local city of Walhalla as the process is now completed in Clemson. Our international guests loved seeing this jewel of the upstate.

Russian/French Students Visit Perrow Farms — October 18, 2013 10/27/2013

Recently, the Russian and French visitors from our 2013 Russian-American Study Abroad Program took a tour of agribusinesses in Calhoun county, South Carolina. One of the visits was to Perrow Farms, outside of Cameron. This is the family farm of one of our students in Agricultural Mechanization and Business at Clemson, John Perrow. John's cousin, Stewart Perrow, was kind enough to show us the new John Deere 7760 round balers for cotton as well as some peanut fields.
