Meet Lila Allen, a member of the Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholars Program
A Landscape Architecture major with a minor in Spanish Studies, Lila is from Asheville, NC and plans to graduate in May 2028. She chose Landscape Architecture because it brings together her interests in art, science and ecology, giving her the opportunity to shape environments in meaningful ways.
As a Chapman Scholar, Lila is developing not only as a designer but also as a leader. Through the program she has connected with community leaders across the Clemson area and gained insight into how collaboration can create a positive impact in our communities. The experience has helped her think more intentionally about her purpose and the change she hopes to bring to landscapes and communities.
“I came to Clemson not only to study Landscape Architecture but also because I truly love learning. It is easy to lose sight of that when deadlines pile up but the Chapman Scholars program reminds me why I’m here and keeps me grounded in my goal of making a positive impact on our landscapes and communities.”
The Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholars Program empowers CAAC students to lead with purpose and apply their design education in ways that serve others.
CAAC students are encouraged to apply for the Chapman Scholars Program. The application deadline is Friday, March 13.

The energy in the room was electric this morning with every seat filled as students gathered for the Professional Practice Lecture Series featuring Michael Ford, Vice President of Global Real Estate & Security at AT&T.
With leadership experience spanning global real estate, workplace innovation and corporate security, Ford shared insight into how technology, strategy and design are shaping efficient, secure and sustainable workplaces around the world. His career also includes executive leadership at Microsoft and service as an officer in the United States Marine Corps.
A special thanks to CAAC faculty member, Lara Browning and her class, as well as the many students who took advantage of this opportunity to engage with an industry leader.
Experiences like this are what make the student experience so impactful. Hearing directly from professionals at the highest levels helps students connect classroom learning with real-world practice and gain perspective on the future of the built environment. 🌍🏗️

After experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency while traveling overseas, Clemson alumni Gretchen and Thom Penney turned a moment of crisis into an act of generosity. Their experience inspired them to establish a new fund at Clemson University that supports global engagement opportunities for students.
The fund will help Clemson students pursue international experiences that broaden perspectives, strengthen leadership skills and create meaningful connections across cultures.
Through their gift, the Penneys hope more students will gain the life-changing experiences that come from learning and engaging around the world. 🌍
