EVERY HITTER HAS TILT. As being discussed to my 14 year old hitter today

And you’ll find more and more hitters have some degree of tilt behind vertical.

Yes, there are definitely anomalies. But the majority of hitters have some form of tilt that gives them an advantage over a hitter who has none.

Some more. Some less.
How much? Comfort + matchup.

Every pitch crosses the zone on a plane.

Different pitcher.
Different pitch plane.
Different amount of tilt.

I’ve watched hitters adjust their tilt depending on who’s on the mound.

Why?

Because it’s a lot easier to MATCH a pitch plane than try to INTERSECT it at one tiny point.

The goal isn’t one perfect posture.

COACHING TAKEAWAY:
Don’t automatically coach tilt out of a hitter because it looks like “leaning back.”

Find the tilt that gives THEIR barrel the best chance to match THAT pitch.

SWINGING WITH YOUR HEAD? MISSING UNDER? BEFORE YOU CHANGE YOUR ENTIRE SWING, CHECK YOUR HEAD. IT COULD BE THAT SIMPLE!

If you’re consistently missing under the ball, your head position may be influencing your swing.

Here’s a simple teaching point from a session.

Watch what happens when the head tilts toward the shoulder—the hands naturally want to drop with it. That can make it much easier for the barrel to work underneath the ball too early.

It’s an easy thing hitters can check on their own video:

At contact, are you seeing more of the SIDE of your head or the TOP of your head?

More ear toward the shoulder can encourage the hands and barrel to work underneath.

Instead, think more chin toward the chest—more of a subtle “YES” movement rather than tilting sideways toward the shoulder.

This isn’t about freezing the head. It’s about recognizing how one small movement can affect everything underneath it.

This one popped up in my memories yesterday — 9 years ago with Tommy White — and it’s still one for the books.

To be VERY clear — this was a SPOOF. 😂 We were making fun of some of the crazy hitting instruction and online (even back then) coaching videos going around back then.

Apparently not much has changed in 9 years. 🤷‍♂️

I keep hearing people talk about “the offseason”… meanwhile, teams are practicing, hitters are training, lessons are happening and everybody is still swinging.

So what offseason? 😂

A conversation with one of my online hitters got me thinking about this. He asked me:

“What should I be doing every day in the offseason?”

My answer was simple:

Give every day a purpose.

One thing I love about what they do at Summers Method is the structure. Training is treated like a daily routine, but every day doesn’t have to be everything.

You don’t need to work on mechanics, bat speed, power, timing, pitch recognition, velocity AND every location in the same session.

Pick ONE primary focus for the day.

One day might be mechanics.
One day bat speed.
One day power.
One day pitch shapes.
One day locations.
One day velocity and timing.

The exact schedule isn’t the point.

The INTENT is.

Take a month and give every training day a specific purpose.

Instead of trying to get better at 10 things today, get really good at ONE.

Then stack those days.

You don’t become a complete hitter by trying to train everything every day.

You become one by consistently training something with purpose every day.

Stop collecting reps.

Start collecting FOCUSED reps.

Maybe we should stop calling it the offseason and start calling it the DEVELOPMENT SEASON.

You hear MLB players say “MOVE THE TEE” and Most hitters get way too comfortable hitting the same pitch…same height…same location…over and over again off a regular tee. HandyTee.com

THE DRILL THAT GETS HATE… BUT IT’S NEVER FAILED.

I was taught this drill many years ago by Epstein Hitting, and I still use it today for one reason: it works.

Sit down. No stride. No drift. No extra movement.

Now learn to unwind from that position and let your body organize itself to get the barrel through the ball.

When you take away the movement, there’s nowhere to hide. You learn how to create quickness and power without momentum.

Then we add the movement back in.

The result? A quicker barrel, more efficient turn, and ultimately more exit velocity.

Sometimes the best way to improve movement is to take the movement away first.

They’ll hate the drill.

They’ll love what it does to their swing. 💥

TIME THE HANDS. ⏱️

One of my hitters went to a tryout and the machine had a tiny feeder and a very short ramp.

Translation: almost no timing window.

It threw him off at first. Then they went to flips and live pitching—and he was right back to normal.

That’s common at EVERY level.

But if part of your tryout depends on hitting off a machine, here’s something that can help:

TIME THE HANDS.

Leg kick.
Toe tap.
No stride.
Big move. Small move.

I don’t care what your feet are doing.

Your lower-half move may change, but the cadence of your hands can stay the same.

Learn to recognize when the ball is coming and time your hands to it.

Machines change. Feeders change. Pitchers change.

TIME THE HANDS.

100K views later… here’s WHY that leverage matters. 👀

The first video showed the position.

This is the movement that creates it.

Watch the reciprocal move Thomas Summers is training here.

As the body moves forward, the hands organize back—creating separation, leverage and, most importantly, quickness.

The hands aren’t getting stuck too high and having to come down.
They’re not dropping too low and having to climb back up.

They’re getting in line with where they’re about to go.

That’s what allows the move to become back → forward, instead of wasting time going up → down or down → up first.

Leverage gives you somewhere to go.
Reciprocal movement gives you the quickness to get there.

Train the movement. Then let the swing happen.

What does “leverage” actually mean in the swing?

For me, leverage is getting the hands in line with where they’re about to go.

Not too high where they have to work down.
Not too low where they have to work back up.

When the hands are organized on that line, the hitter can work back → forward and deliver the barrel with strength.

Too much up → down or down → up before you can go forward creates unnecessary movement—and usually a weaker move.

Get in line. Stay leveraged. Then go.

Train with an expert, not an influencer.
