Forward head posture is one of the most common distortions seen today.
But it rarely starts at the neck.
Changes in the pelvis, rib cage, or thoracic spine can shift the body’s center of balance, forcing the head to move forward to maintain equilibrium.
Posturology helps therapists understand where the distortion started, not just where it’s visible.

A full postural chart includes over 80 measurements.
But with training, a Neurosomatic Therapist can complete this assessment in about 15 minutes.
How?
Through repetition, precise hand placement, and trained visual acuity.
What begins as a challenging skill eventually becomes a fast and reliable method for gathering critical clinical information.

How detailed should postural analysis be?
At CNS, our system measures over 80 anatomical landmarks.
Each point compares the position of skeletal structures relative to one another.
These measurements allow therapists to:
• Identify distortion patterns
• Understand compensation strategies
• Track structural change over time
It’s a level of assessment that transforms posture from a guess… into measurable information.

Posture isn’t a fixed position.
It’s a constantly maintained balance of muscular activity.
Every moment your body is adjusting tension in muscles to keep you upright against gravity.
When certain muscles become dominant and others weaken or lengthen, the body adapts.
Over time those adaptations become visible in posture.
Posturology allows therapists to identify those adaptations and understand how they influence function and pain.

Why Posture Matters for Pain
Pain often shows up where the body is compensating, not where the problem started.
Postural distortions change how forces move through the body.
A rotated pelvis can influence the spine.
A shifted rib cage can influence the shoulders.
A forward head can influence the entire back.
Posture reveals these patterns.
When therapists understand those relationships, treatment becomes far more effective.

C1/C2 isn’t “out.”
It’s being held there.
When someone says their atlas or axis is “out of place,”
the next question is:
What muscles are putting it there?
Bones don’t migrate on their own.
They respond to force.
And in the upper cervical spine — where neurological density is incredibly high — even subtle asymmetrical tone in the suboccipitals, SCM, scalenes, or deep cervical stabilizers can create rotational bias and positional distortion.
The neurosomatic approach asks:
• What neurological input is driving this tone?
• What compensation patterns may have reinforced it?
• What muscles are overpowering its antagonist?
• What stabilizers may have failed to do their job?
When you normalize the neuromuscular imbalance,
the skeletal alignment often follows.
That’s a different level of thinking.
At the Center for Neurosomatic Studies, students are trained to analyze the relationship between muscle tone, neurological input, and joint position — especially in sensitive regions like C1/C2.
While we can “put bones back.”
We can't neglect the forces acting on them.

Hip pain isn’t always a hip problem.
Most people are told:
👉 Stretch it.
👉 Strengthen it.
👉 Rest it.
But what if the hip is just the victim?
The neurosomatic approach looks deeper.
At the Center for Neurosomatic Studies, we teach students to assess:
• Lumbar nerve involvement
• Pelvic alignment and biomechanics
• Functional muscle imbalance
• Compensation patterns from gait and posture
• Core stabilization deficits
Because pain is often the end result of neurological and biomechanical dysfunction — not the starting point.
When you understand the nervous system’s role in muscle firing patterns and joint stabilization, you stop chasing symptoms…
and start correcting causes.
That’s the difference between applying a technique
and applying clinical reasoning.
