The school opens at 8:20 am and closes at 5:30 pm. The regular classroom/study hours are 8:45 am - 3:15 pm. The after school program is from 3:15 pm - 5:20 pm. Those students who stay after school may take part in different activities such as dance class, chess class, art classes, team sports, music class, games, etc. Some older students go downtown to study or take classes at St Pete College, and
many of our teens have after school, part-time jobs. This schedule seems to work out really well for all. Washburn Academy accepts temporary students in addition to offering a year round program. Free college dual enrollment programs are offered to High School students, many of whom have tested into the program with honors. Washburn graduates successfully receive scholarship programs in addition to college acceptance and placement in many major universities in and out of the state of Florida. Washburn Academy is licensed to use Applied Scholastics (APS) educational services and materials. One curriculum tool we use is a program of key word clearing (in addition to many exercises and drills) of the basic terms in the subjects of mathematics, language arts, history, science, geography, etc. This program is not only great for cleaning up some of the "gaps" a student may have encountered in his/her education rather quickly but it also gives students just starting out a nice solid foundation on which to build their skills and knowledge in any area of study. Any student will then have the tools he/she will need to pursue subjects that are of interest to him/her, opening the door for endless opportunities. Regarding food/drinks for lunch and breaks, your child would need to pack enough for a morning snack, lunch and afternoon snacks each day. With it being so hot and humid at times in Florida, definitely ensure they have plenty to drink. We have microwaves for food requiring heating up. Every Friday we have "Pizza Day" where your child may buy cheese or pepperoni pizza at $1.00 a slice(s). Often there are other food items for sale earlier in the week but Friday pizza day is a standard. =)
Washburn offers potential new students the opportunity to come visit us for a free day or two. This way potential students can get a feel for the people and the school. This also helps the parents and student(s) decide if we are the right school for them. Call or email us today to find out more! Here is another parent success that we would like to share with you...
"Washburn Academy is a great school. She is doing better than she has at any previous school. The kids are great. The teachers care and really see that the kids are learning. This is great to see in a society where most schools are failing miserably."
