Yesterday, our professor Dr. Cara Estes and president Alan Moore led a shark dissection aboard one of our research vessels, giving Coastal Marine Education and Research Academy students a unique opportunity to see inside these incredible apex predators.

These dissections provide a rare opportunity to examine the anatomy of different shark species, learn more about what they’ve been feeding on in our area, and better understand the adaptations that allow them to thrive in our coastal waters. While our research focuses on the behavior and ecology of living sharks, dissections are an important part of understanding elasmobranch biology and giving students a more complete understanding of these animals.

As CMERA’s summer research season begins to wind down, our fall semester is just around the corner! If you’ve been considering pursuing a career in marine science but aren’t sure where to start, reach out to our team. We’d love to talk with you about your goals and help you find the right path at Moore Marine College. 🦈🌊

🌊 Our Moore Marine College students have had a pretty busy summer!

From leading CMERA research trips, releasing rehabilitated sea turtles, and scuba diving in Colombia, our students have spent their summer gaining the kind of hands-on experience you just can’t get in a classroom.

And the best part? This kind of field experience doesn’t stop when summer ends. Our students are out on the water and gaining real-world marine science experience year-round!
