WHY YOUR Grappling sucks.
You don't need more techniques; every day you scroll through dozens of 15-second highlight clips with no detail on how to do them. You pick one, try it for a few days, and then move on to the next.
Your coach shows a system for an entire 4 weeks! And when it's done, you focus on the next subject.
15 seconds, a few days, or even 4 weeks are not enough for you to become proficient or own a technique.
Unless you spend significant time developing ownership over a system (try 4 months), everything you are learning is, at best, defense. Even if what was shown was an offensive move.
What does that mean?
Your defense should be broad in scope, but minimal in detail. You don't need to execute an armbar from k-guard perfectly, but if you have a vague understanding of how it works, you can likely stop it. The worst thing that can happen is someone surprising you with a novel system.
The one-month curriculum is enough to remove novelty.
Your offense MUST be hyper-focused. You have a few things that you are extremely good at doing under pressure. You can do it, even if they know it's happening. Your offense is developed over long periods of focused, deliberate training. You want to be good at a choice bar; take a few months, and every time you roll, that will be your end goal.

🏄 Surfboard Pass – How It Works

Professor Brian breaks down the surfboard pass and explains why it can feel difficult at first — and how to make it reliable.

It looks hard, but if you practice it 100 times, you’ll start to own it.

Key points:
1️⃣ The hardest part isn’t the pass itself — it’s stabilizing afterward.
2️⃣ There’s a big distance between your chest and theirs, which gives them time to frame.
3️⃣ You can try to tilt through the frames or smash through them.
4️⃣ The best finish is to keep circling while driving your head down toward their belly button to close the space and secure the position.

💡 Focus on closing the distance with your head and continuing to circle. That’s what turns a completed pass into a controlled dominant position.

🔄 Using Angles & Arcs to Pass

Professor Brian breaks down a key concept for better guard passing: using angles and arcs instead of driving straight forward.

This principle helps create better leverage and forces predictable reactions from your opponent.

How it works:
1️⃣ Don’t move straight into your opponent when passing.
2️⃣ Move at an angle while arcing and turning your hips toward them.
3️⃣ If they stay still, you can easily push them over.
4️⃣ Most people (even untrained) will turn to follow you — this predictable reaction is what we want to exploit.

💡 Moving on an arc creates better angles and forces your opponent to react. Once they turn to follow, you can capitalize on that movement to complete the pass.

🦵 Proper High Stepping Technique

Professor Brian breaks down the correct way to high step so your opponent has a harder time controlling your leg.

This small detail can make a big difference when you’re trying to free your leg or advance position.

How to high step correctly:
1️⃣ Lift your leg straight up.
2️⃣ Straighten your foot as you elevate it.
3️⃣ Avoid bending the leg — a bent leg gives your opponent a better chance to hook and slow you down.

💡 A straight leg and pointed foot make it much harder for your opponent to control or trap your leg. Clean high steps lead to cleaner passes and better movement.

As a coach, mentor, life guru, financial advisor, black belt, world-everything-neck tattoo-expert. 🤣

Your job is not to produce clones.

Help them find their game. It might be completely different than yours.

They might favor techniques you think are silly but work for them.

That's OK.

What matters is you, them, the parents, their teammates- all of you help them try.

Win or lose, it doesn't matter. What matters is they try, and then we figure out what is working and what is not.

🧠 Turtle Arm Trap to Back Take Drill

Professor Brian demonstrates a great positional problem-solving drill from a loose turtle position focused on isolating the arm and taking the back.

This drill helps develop better knee insertion, arm trapping, and back-taking pressure under resistance.

How the drill works:
1️⃣ Your partner starts in a loose turtle.
2️⃣ You start with one knee inserted between their leg/torso and arm.
3️⃣ Your goal is to trap their arm and take the back.
4️⃣ Your partner’s goal is to stop you from securing the position.
5️⃣ Reset and repeat as needed.

💡 Focus on using the inserted knee to control the space and isolate the arm. Once the arm is trapped, the path to the back becomes much clearer.

When you are coaching, you need to limit the number of corrections you make.

Too many, and nothing will be corrected.

The hard part is quickly identifying the one thing that will have the greatest impact on the outcome.
