This weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Utah Music Teachers Association State Conference. It is always a privilege to meet with colleagues and continue to learn and grow!

Some highlights in the photos below: Masterclasses with incredible teachers, presentations comparing composers by their use of space and rests within music, and a presentation on Harpsichord music in what we hear today.

I had such a wonderful opportunity to attend a Zoom presentation with Chee-Hwa Tan yesterday! Chee-Hwa Tan presented on why she became a composer, and how she teaches using her compositions.

Chee-Hwa writes her music with student technique in mind, and helps students achieve the sounds they want by thinking about the feelings the music creates. Her music is focused on the story, emotions, and sounds of the piece.

I loved seeing her perform and share her music (and the poetry which inspires it) with us. It’s definitely on my “to-acquire” wishlist! Thank you to Chee-Hwa Tan and to Heather Smith for arranging the presentation.

All of the feelings of a first day of school! Miss E. learned "School Bell Is Ringing!" today. It's our first day of school here, and the song was unplanned, so we got a good laugh out of it!

Happy Monday!

I have spots available in my Mini Musicians music class! Fall semester starts in September, and runs for 10 weeks!

This is a super fun way for your kiddo to enjoy music while moving around, dancing, clapping, and exploring music! Kids build listening skills, singing, pre-music reading, and so many other skills.

Please message me if you'd like to reserve your spot or with any questions. Space is limited to 4-5 students per class so each child gets lots of individual help and attention. Feel free to like and share, too!

Classes will be Wednesday 4-4:45 and 5-5:45. If there is enough interest, I may be able to have a Tuesday morning class, too or an early afternoon class, too.

Student: "What does the thing by m. 9 that looks like the Walmart symbol mean?"

It was fun to have a quick discussion about asterisks and how they work. I love seeing students curiousity!

Did you learn to play a musical instrument or want to as a kid? A survey by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra shows that 9 out of 10 children have a desire to learn a musical instrument. That's a pretty incredible number.

This fall, I'm adding some group young student music classes to my studio in addition to piano, organ, flute, and voice lessons.

Mini Musicians is an hour long weekly group class with 4-5 spots available in each class, and it is for ages 3-5. It's a fabulous way to prepare for musical instrument goals, and it's super fun! Classes are very exploration and play based with lots of movement and learning activities, and would take place in Clearfield near Barlow Park and Antelope Elementary.

I'm still working on the fall calendar, but if you are interested, please fill out the form below. You'll see questions about scheduling (what times would work for you) and a place to put your contact information. I'm hoping to find times that work best for everyone who would like to participate.

We had an AIM party!

Achievement in Music (AIM) is a non-competitive evaluation program designed to help students progress in Performance, Technique, Sight-Reading, Theory, and Ear Training.

At our party students performed for each other and completed the theory exam portion of AIM. They're celebrating Theory completion in a couple of the photos!

It's been a busy 2024 so far. More updates to come.

At the beginning of the month, I had a wonderful opportunity to present at the February Ogden Chapter UMTA meeting. The topic I chose was Engaging Beginner Students and Overcoming Beginner Learning Hurdles.

It's so fun to share ideas and things I've learned in teaching with other teachers. How grateful I am for opportunities to learn together!

In November, I presented at the Utah Music Teachers Association (UMTA) conference! My topic was Virtual Teaching Techniques: How to Teach Effectively in a Virtual Format.

I loved presenting and learning from other incredible teachers and pedagogues. I always appreciate opportunities to spend time with other teachers and be inspired with new perspectives and teaching strategies.

I had the pleasure of meeting the National Music Teachers Association (MTNA) President Peter Mack, NCTM*. He is delightful, and we had a good time talking about unique names.

Also pictured is my incredible high school teacher Denise Frost, NCTM and current UMTA president. She is absolutely incredible, and I am so privileged to have her support and strength in my corner. I am constantly inspired by her dedication, knowledge, and service.

Finally, a huge thank you to Carmen Hall and her team for all of the effort that goes into these conferences.

*NCTM stands for Nationally Certified Teacher of Music

Many students have recently started learning about the music staff. I love opportunities to use our whole bodies to learn, but I didn't have a chance to print or make a more durable option.

This is a super easy way you can make your own floor staff at home. All it takes is some painters tape. The cards have letter names A-G written on them. They're just index cards cut in half and marked with sharpie.

Some ideas for use:
Practice steps and skips (or larger intervals) on the staff. Physically move or jump as you step up or down or skip up or down.

Compose your own melody in either treble or bass clef.

Take a piece the student is learning, and "transcribe" it on to the floor staff.

Choose a line or space and determine its alphabet name, then find it on the keyboard.
