Just when you think Illinois has run out of ideas!

Illinois is pushing some more aggressive gun control, and it doesn’t just target fi****ms. It targets the ammunition itself.

HB4414 would fundamentally change how ammunition is bought, sold, tracked, and even possessed in the state.

Here’s what’s in the bill:

• Mandatory ammo serialization (Starting Jan 1, 2027)
Every round of handgun ammunition would need a unique identifier—tracked from manufacture to end user.

• Criminal penalties for non-serialized ammo
Selling or distributing non-serialized ammo becomes a Class A misdemeanor.
Possessing it in public? That’s a criminal offense too.

• Each round = a separate charge
Possession penalties apply per round, meaning a single box of ammo could lead to multiple charges.

• Statewide ammo registry
Illinois State Police would maintain a centralized database tracking ammunition transactions and ownership.

• Mandatory reporting of buyers
Every purchase would require recording your name, ID, DOB, and the unique identifier of the ammo you bought—and reporting it to the state.

• New fees on ammunition
Up to 5 cents per round is added to cover the cost of the system.

• Vendor and manufacturer registration requirements
Retailers and manufacturers must register with the state and comply with strict tracking and reporting rules.

This bill doesn’t just regulate access. It tracks it. It records it.
And it criminalizes possession under new conditions.

For gun owners in Illinois, this is a big one.

Let’s talk about carry methods. Over a year ago, I implemented a “f***y pack,” yes, I said it, a “f***y pack.” After hours of reviewing products, I settled on the Eberlestock Bando Bag. Once I received the bag, I made one minor modification. In the front slip pouches, I added adhesive Velcro and attached a Velcro triple mag pouch, which kept my spare mags in position and correct orientation, and allows for the addition of a handheld light. The main compartment also comes with a holder for a tourniquet, which is a bonus.

Why I love this bag, traveling is a synch, the bag sits right in my lap and allows for quick access to a firearm while being comfortable on long drives, (side note, lap belt goes under the bag). Quick runs, when leaving the house on short notice or quick trips, the bags are super convenient to grab and throw on, and allow you the option of carrying several items in one piece of kit.

Downsides: “It’s a f***y pack,” and let me tell you, I never thought I would wear one. For me, it became easy; all I had to do was wear it one weekend at a volleyball tournament and let my daughter's 17 & and 18-year-old teammates make fun of me for a couple of days, and I was good to go. Visibility, some people may assume it’s for carrying a firearm, but the majority of people most likely don’t know.

For the holster, I utilize Cross Breeds' modular velcro-backed holster, which attaches to a dedicated pouch for fi****ms that is Velcro-lined. It’s an affordable holster designed for the specific make of firearm you carry, affordable to have a couple if you are changing up your carry gun.
