Special Opportunity for Wooden Horse Students!

Steve Rother Horsemanship has generously invited all current students of The Wooden Horse to audit his upcoming clinic at the WA State Horse Park in Cle Elum for just $5 per day.
This is an incredibly generous offer, and we’re very grateful to Steve for extending this special invitation to our community. Opportunities like this are a wonderful way to learn, observe, and deepen your horsemanship outside of regular lessons.

I’m sharing his flyer with all the pertinent information.
Keep an eye on your email—we’ll be organizing this as a field trip on April 17th!
Looking forward to learning together.

Naturally, over the last few months, when the riding around here slowed, we focused on the kind of work that really matters. Our horsemanship students (and their parents) learned how to take a horse’s vital signs, spent time on groundwork, grooming, and feeding, and practiced the little skills that build confidence—like trailer loading, tying knots and handling the horse with intention.

There was also plenty of time to just be - with the horses, the alpacas, the goats, the chickens… and of course the barn cats. We even welcomed a new one (though to be fair, he chose us 😂). And Lilith continues to be as adorable as ever.

While winter isn’t a flashy season by any means, it usually is an important one. A time to build foundations, deepen understanding, and enjoy the quiet moments that make this life so special.

With spring around the corner, our riding season begins in April, and the calendar is now open for bookings. We’re looking forward to getting back in the saddle and sharing another season with all of you.

These four photos show Snickers’ journey from where we started in spring of 2024 to where he is today. We acquired Snickers in 2023 and intentionally gave him time off during his first year with us to simply settle in and adjust.

Early on, it was clear that his posture and overall body condition were compromised which showed up behaviorally through rearing, bolting, and crowding when worked. Those behaviors didn’t come from defiance, but from not feeling balanced in his own body. Horses are prey animals, so balance and the ability to run to safety is their first line of defense. When a horse doesn’t feel physically stable, anxiety often takes over.

For a long time, Snickers was very anxious and strongly herd bound. Taking him away from the herd made him difficult (and at times unsafe) to handle. Luckily, that behavior has changed. Especially over the last six months, our primary focus has been relaxation by establishing a calm baseline before asking for anything more.

With the meticulous guidance and help of two wonderful teachers, Snickers and I have been making steady progress. His posture, balance, and confidence have improved—and he truly looks and moves more and more like a horse now.

Snickers is also the reason behind my new Patreon series, Simplicity, Patience, and Compassion, a space where I share the quiet, foundational work that often doesn’t look flashy, but changes everything for both human and horse.

We have 2 spots left!

Winter is a great time to slow down and build understanding. This kids horsemanship class is designed to help young horse lovers learn how horses think, what they need, and what ethical, natural horsemanship really means—all in a calm, indoor setting.

We focus on knowledge, awareness, and preparation for hands-on classes later in the spring. The small group format allows for thoughtful discussion, questions, and meaningful learning. Parents are always welcome.

All details are in the flyer. Feel free to reach out with questions. Link to sign up in bio.

Winter is a wonderful time to slow down and learn. This kids horsemanship class is designed to build understanding, curiosity, and confidence around horses. During the class, we’ll explore what horses need, how they think and communicate, and what ethical, natural horsemanship really means. A thoughtful, low-pressure way for horse-loving kids to learn and prepare for hands-on classes in the spring. Each student takes home a folder with class materials.

Winter Lessons Are Back (Limited Availability)!
Now that the round pen has been plowed, I’m opening up a limited number of lessons with Couscous & Stella. These sessions are a great opportunity to brush up on your horsemanship skills and focus on feel, timing, and communication.
Because of winter conditions and less-than-ideal footing, these lessons will be groundwork, walk, and trot only—perfect for building strong foundations without rushing the process. Lessons are weather permitting, as the round pen is not covered.
Lessons can be booked online (link in bio).
Spots are limited, so be sure to grab one if you’ve been wanting to get back in the pen this winter.
I look forward to working with you!
