Probably a good third to 1/2 of my tutoring clients had adhd. Both my own boys also have it. Embracing this chart explains so much!! This means my oldest actually went into the military as a cognitive 12 year old!!! No wonder things were a hot mess for a while. This gives us so much perspective when we feel frustrated with these kiddos. And by the way at 30 years old chronologically he is doing amazingly!

Most of my work as a math teacher is not teaching math but teaching students to BELIEVE they can also do math.

Most of the kiddos I tutor have some form of math anxiety. I have seen it completely shut down their ability to process information. BUT when we play games, that anxiety disappears and they begin to see math in all its beauty. Their minds, are all of a sudden, open to drawing connections they need!

I was most definitely NOT a math person in school. It made me feel so stupid. Math was primarily taught in a procedural way that made no sense to this big picture thinker. In my early years as a teacher the big picture got filled in and slowly I began to see the beauty in math. Now I only tutor math. My goal is to turn former math “haters” into math lovers. I love it.
