You may not be thinking about icy roads right now, but if you think about how salt is used to melt the ice on a winter road, you will know the secret to this ice cream in a bag experiment! Have fun together measuring, pouring and shaking your way to a delicious frozen treat that is also a mystery. Here is the science behind the freezing; adding salt to the ice lowers its melting point which pulls heat away from the cream in the bag, allowing it to freeze.

Ingredients
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup half and half
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 gallon sized re-sealable plastic bags
2 cups ice cubes
1/2 cup salt
optional: top with chocolate syrup and sprinkles

Instructions
1. Pour cream, half and half, sugar, and vanilla extract into a gallon sized re-sealable plastic bag.
2. Seal well. Squish it around to combine until sugar is dissolved.
3. Place ice cubes and salt into another gallon sized re-sealable plastic bag.
4. Place the bag with the ice cream mixture into the bag with the ice. Seal the larger bag.
5. Shake until mixture freezes, about 5 to 7 minutes.
*Use oven mits or a towel to wrap around the bag while shaking, so your hands won’t get too cold.

Helping Kids to Love Giving - Kids 'R' Kids

During the holidays, opportunities abound to help kids understand why and how to help people in need, with food drives increasing and countless organizations asking for end-of-year donations.

Nurturing a child’s inner motivation for generosity helps develop something he or she wants to do and not seen as a chore imposed on them by an outside force (like an anxious parent). Giving, in other words, has to feel good.

So how can we make sure that giving feels good for kids and launches this “positive cycle” of happiness and generosity? Check out the blog below to read about five lessons to help your child with giving.

Did you know that November is Native American Heritage Month? During this month and all months, we celebrate the strong, enduring, sacred culture of Native Americans. We honor the countless contributions of Native peoples, past and present, and give thanks for their influence on our Nation’s advancement. Our mission is to ensure that every young mind has the opportunity to learn about the world around them. We can’t wait for our students to get involved in the festivities we have planned for Native American Heritage Month!

8 - Paper Plate Lion.mp4

Teaching a child about community is an important aspect of his or her self-worth and helps to build important life skills like teamwork and communication. Lions are a fascinating example of a complex community from the natural world because of how a pride depends on its members for survival.

Use this fun lion craft to emphasize the importance of being social and caring for others all while practicing developmental skills like cutting, painting, and gluing.
According to the African Wildlife Federation, the conservation status of the lion species is vulnerable due to overhunting and rapidly declining habitats. You can use your time together to discuss the importance of natural habitats and making an impact to preserve Earth’s majestic creatures.

Materials

A White Paper Plate
Construction Paper – Yellow, Orange, Brown or Beige
Paint – Yellow, Orange & Black
Sponge to paint
Glue
String or yarn
Big Googly Eyes
Scissors
Pencil

Step 1: Using a sponge, paint the paper plate by lightly dabbing the surface and blending the colors.

Step 2: Cut the construction paper into strips, varying the width (and length if desired). Using the end of a pencil, wrap each strand of paper around the utensil to create a tight coil. Remove the paper by sliding the coil off the paintbrush and let naturally unravel.

Step 3: Following the circumference of the paper plate, glue each strand of paper into the paper plate leaving a gap in-between each.
Be generous with the application of glue to ensure each strand is securely stuck!

Literacy Connection: The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney is an adaptation of one of Aesop’s most popular fables. This wordless version with award-winning illustrations highlights the natural beauty of the African Serengeti. It celebrates the story of a frightful lion and timid mouse who learn that taking a chance with a random act of kindness can change lives in a miraculous way.

Let’s Celebrate Each Other During National Book Month!

For centuries books have acted as a tool to help teach, inspire, create change, and uplift people of all ages.

We know that reading to our little ones helps their brain development. Equally, literacy skills allow them to discover different cultures and heritages from around the world. Although we value the importance of books every day, we’d like to highlight some of our favorite books for
National Book Month that help expand young minds. Each of our Kids 'R' Kids academies tailors a selection of fun, informative books that embrace our children’s unique beliefs and create an inclusive environment. Here are some of our top picks to share with your family and friends:

- The World Needs More Purple People, by Kristen Bell and Benjamin Hart, teaches inclusion by embracing what makes you special while finding common ground with those around you.
- I’ll Walk with You, by Carol Lynn Pearson, teaches students about diversity and kindness towards everyone, including people with disabilities.
- Love Makes a Family, by Sophie Beer, teaches about different family structures
- Little Dreamers, by Vashti Harrison, inspires students by teaching about the different accomplishments of visionary women around the world. (This is part of a series. The other books are also great and recommended. They teach about the accomplishments of Black women and Black men.)
- Hats of Faith, by Medeia Cohan, teaches students about different religions around the world by exploring head coverings.
- The Skin You Live In, by Michael Tyler, is a playful sing-along book that celebrates people of all skin tones.

Stop by your local Kids 'R' Kids and see what’s popular in our National Book Month reading circles!

“Slicha,” which means sorry in Hebrew, can be the most important thing you can ever say to someone. This lesson, among others, is a cornerstone of the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, which offers a chance for people to change their fate through prayer, repentance, and charity. No matter what religion you practice, we humans understand that nobody is perfect and that we all make mistakes! Whether breaking something that doesn’t belong to you, saying something hurtful, or placing blame on the wrong person, we all make missteps in life! When this happens, the most important thing to do is apologize and ask for forgiveness.

To help students understand the act of atonement, we’ve put together fun activities to help them recognize their wrongdoings and how a simple apology can bring positive self-growth. We’ll also celebrate by learning the history of Yom Kippur and exploring traditional foods like kreplach.

At Kids 'R' Kids, we value our students’ unique beliefs. We strive to create a nurturing and inclusive environment for all children to learn about different religions and cultures through fun and engaging activities. Stop by your local Kids 'R' Kids to see what inspiring activities we have planned for Yom Kippur!

Our Story

Kids ‘R’ Kids opened in December 2005 by owners Greg and Tara Abernathy. They desired to bring a leading edge, academic based, top quality childcare center to the town of Clayton. Since then, Greg and Tara and their staff have witnessed over 500 students graduate Jr.Kindergarten and almost 300 students complete a private year of Kindergarten. From infants to school-age, thousands of children are lovingly guided into each age and stage while receiving opportunities to challenge themselves and healthily grow.

We are a preschool of academic excellence, not just a daycare. We utilize a standards driven, year-round curriculum that is designed and updated quarterly by professional child care educators exclusively for Kids 'R' Kids. Academic objectives are cross-referenced to reflect National and North Carolina standards. Our school provides students with technology and hands on based learning. We are home to three smart boards in our classrooms where children play academic games and more on big interactive white boards. Our STEAM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) enhances the learning experience. Many times throughout the year, we host a STEAM fair so families can observe skills students have mastered.

Cleanliness, safety and teacher trainings help us to stand out from other programs. With our keypad entry, supervised front desk and glass walls, we take safety and supervision as a priority. We have an outside cleaning team who does a thorough clean of the building every night of the week in addition to our teachers ensuring rooms are sanitized and disinfected throughout the day. We also commit to guiding our teachers and staff on a pathway to success. It’s our desire for our team goals to align with their individual goals. Through state training hours and Kids ‘R’ Kids training sessions, we all learn how to better love and care for the children so many have entrusted to us.

Our school is excited with each and every new family who joins the center. Choosing childcare can be a difficult decision. We strive to make it as easy as possible and partner with parents to help them enjoy the absolute best years of their children’s lives. We are family at Kids ‘R’ Kids.
