The first 10-day Vipassana course in Virginia was held in 2002 at Camp Virginia Jaycee near Blue Ridge, Virginia. The organization of the first course by a handful of meditators was a huge task. There were many factors that had to be considered during the initial planning stages, such as finding a suitable site, arranging to bring a teacher in for the course, ensuring there was an adequate number

of attending students, and putting financing in place to cover initial deposits and the ongoing expenses to support the running of the course. The success and organization of the first course prompted the management of the camp to offer the facilities to us for courses during their off season. In 2004 a summit was held in Maryland to bring all of these regions together to plan the work of establishing more and more courses in this area. This has culminated in 2005 in the creation of a Trust to organize further Vipassana activities in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Patrick Given-Wilson speaks about Emperor Ashoka, grandson of Chandragupta, founder of the Maurya Dynasty. Ashoka ruled most of the Indian subcontinent between about 268 to 232 BCE, and lived at a time when Dhamma was still strong in India. He fostered it throughout his kingdom and widely beyond its borders. He sent two arahants, Sona Thera and Uttara Thera, to Burma where the practice extended through generations of teachers to Ledi Sayadaw, Saya Thetgyi, Sayagyi U Ba Khin, and S.N. Goenka. It was because of Ashoka that we can practice Dhamma today.

Construction on Building 4 is moving quickly. Room and cell framing are complete. Plumbers are currently working on the drainage system, drilling floor holes, and running PVC piping to the basement and attic vents. Additionally, workers have removed all the bricks from the end of the building to prepare for the new addition.
