Some masks perform strength. This one performs happiness. Call it the Fine One. Everything is always fine, good even, no matter what's actually happening underneath, because somewhere along the way this person learned that their pain was a burden other people had to manage, and the kindest thing they could do was never hand anyone that burden in the first place.
The Fine One shows up cheerful at gatherings three weeks after something genuinely devastating happened, and means it, mostly, because the alternative, letting the room see the actual weight of what's going on, feels like it would cost more than it would ever give back. So the mask goes on, and it's a good mask, warm and likable and easy to be around, which is exactly why nobody questions it.
What gets lost isn't the happiness. Some of it is real. What gets lost is access, the kind where somebody could actually show up for you in the hard season, because you never gave them coordinates for where you actually were. You kept everyone at the entrance of a house whose real rooms nobody's ever seen.
The mask isn't dishonest exactly. It's incomplete. It's the top half of the truth, offered instead of the whole thing, because the whole thing once felt like too much to ask anyone to hold.
What's the fine you're currently performing that isn't the whole truth?
