Today, our Primary students voted for one of tomorrow’s easel paint colors! They chose between yellow and orange, and they voted privately by placing their selection in an envelope, sealing it with tape, and placing the envelope in a ballot box. And then (because it wouldn’t be voting day without one), they received a sticker that said “I VOTED for paint color today at Northcrest Montessori”!

Our goals for this activity:
1. Voting is important to make your voice heard!
2. Everyone’s vote is private; no one will know how you voted unless you tell them!
3. The winner is determined by counting and recording each vote; the color with the most votes wins!

The students had an exciting and fun time! And the #1 question asked by most students before finalizing their vote: Which color will win?

Children in our Primary classrooms have enjoyed serving tea together. Tea serving is part of the practical life curriculum and helps to develop knowledge in both the areas of food preparation and grace and courtesy in the Montessori classroom. There are many steps to follow for tea time: children set their table and invite a friend to have tea, they are offered a tea bag and select which one they'd like to have, they select their cup and learn how to handle the delicate materials and tea pot, the children get to place their tea bag in their cup, and then they get to enjoy their tea with a biscuit and time with their friend.

Our Founder and Head of School Kavitha Mehta provided testimony in front of the House of Delegates Ways & Means Committee in Annapolis on Wednesday in support of House Bill 206, which would include Montessori schools in the Prekindergarten Expansion Grant Program! Here she is with Delegate Julian Ivey, the sponsor of the bill, Wendy Shenk-Evans from Montessori Public Policy Initiative, and Nancy Anselm from Montessori Schools of Maryland.

Geography is introduced around the age of three in a Primary Montessori community. As a part of the Sensorial area, children are first introduced to a sandpaper globe, on which the “land” is sandpaper and the “water” is smooth. Children work with a painted globe to decipher between continents and oceans. Children are then introduced to the map of the world (seven continents); in the introductory lesson, we use clay to model our three-dimensional globe and cut and flatten the clay, demonstrating the two hemispheres on the map. Subsequent lessons are the map of each continent (starting with North America, since that is where we live) and the United States of America.

Once they are familiar with building these maps in and out of their frames, children work to develop their vocabulary further on the continents, countries, and states. Older students work to create their own maps and booklets as a cumulation of all they have learned.

Today we are delivering "bedtime bags" to the children staying at the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center in Columbia, Maryland. Our extremely generous Northcrest families and faculty helped to donate comfy bedtime items. Each bag contains a warm blanket, slippers, a robe, and multiple pajamas for the children currently residing there.

We are so grateful to partner with Grassroots. They are an incredible resource for families in need in our community. For more information about the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center in Columbia, Maryland please visit https://grassrootscrisis.org.

This Leadership Year (Kindergarten) student is working on an exercise of the addition strip board and figuring out all the ways to make a certain number (10 in this picture). This exercise offers children a concrete material to help them in their journey of the memorization of addition facts.
