Undergraduate public health concentration and Master of Public Health (MPH) at APSU

-Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Performance with a concentration in Public Health degree program:
*Offered on campus, the public health concentration provides students the opportunity to prepare for entry level public health or health education specialist positions in hospitals, clinics, schools, businesses, government, and non-profits. Students will engage in various experiential learning opportunities where they will apply what they are learning in class during community and campus events. At the end of the program, students will be able to apply for and complete a semester-long internship as part of the program, and they will be encouraged to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®) exam to expand their public health credentials. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the health education field is expected to grow 17% from 2020-2030. To earn a degree in Health and Human Performance with a concentration in Public Health, the student must earn 120 total hours. The curriculum requires the students to take APSU 1000 (1 hour), 41 general education hours, 43 hours in the major, and 35 elective hours.

-Master of Public Health degree program:
*Offered online, the Master of Public Health (MPH) will prepare students for work in the field of public health. Throughout the program, students will engage in various experiential learning opportunities where they will be able to demonstrate public health competency attainment in real world settings. Additionally, students will be encouraged to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®) or Certified Public Health (CPH) exam to expand their public health credentials. Public health career settings include hospitals, clinics, schools, businesses, government, and non-profits. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field is expected to grow 17% from 2020-2030. Program features:

Big congratulations to our own Dr. Tillewein, who was honored last week with Southern Illinois University's Young Alumni Achievement Award. Dr. Tillewein attended the Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony on September 11. She credits much of that path to her mentors at Southern Illinois University. We're proud to have Dr. Tillewein here. Congratulations! 🎉

Last week, the Master of Public Health (MPH) program hosted a Peayple in the Community event. Students, faculty, and staff worked together to restock Little Free Libraries at local Head Start locations, increasing access to books for young readers and families.
They also decorated the Gov's Oasis (located on the third floor of HPB), APSU's brand new campus relaxation room, to create a welcoming space that supports student well-being. These projects are part of the MPH Program's service-learning experience, supported by grant-funded initiatives that build community partnerships focused on advancing health equity.

What a meaningful day of service at APSU Peayple in the Community Day of Service! 💚

Our Health in Practice initiative showcased the power of service-learning through our Master of Public Health program.

📚 Volunteers stocked Little Free Libraries at every Clarksville-Montgomery County Head Start location with children's books, including many from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

This effort extends the impact of our 2024–2025 Community LIFT (Literacy Initiative for Fostering Thinkers) program, which promoted child health literacy and was supported by nearly $27,000 in external funding from the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation and the Nashville Predators Foundation Helper Grant.

🌿 Volunteers also helped enhance the Gov's Oasis Relaxation Space in the Health Professions Building.

This space is part of our 2025–2026 Home Away from Home initiative, which focuses on supporting student mental health and well-being through connection, belonging, and wellness programming. This initiative is funded through APSU's Office of Institutional Culture.

These projects demonstrate how service-learning allows our MPH students and community partners to turn public health knowledge into meaningful action—creating healthier communities while making a lasting difference for children, college students, and our region.

📢 CHES® EXAM DEADLINE APPROACHING!

Are you planning to take the October 2026 CHES® exam? Now is the time to register!

This October will be the final CHES® exam administration based on the current HESPA II content outline. Beginning in 2027, the exam will transition to HESPA III, bringing updated exam content, a new study guide, and a modest increase in exam fees.

The TPHA Conference will take place September 23-25th. Attending a professional development event such as a statewide conference is a great way to network and learn about public health issues in TN, and TPHA will be funding registration fees and in some cases lodging for multiple APSU students.

Join APSU Public Health students and faculty during Peayple’s Day of Service!

Hosted by APSU's Master of Public Health (MPH) Program, volunteers will work together on projects that promote health, well-being, and literacy on campus and in our community.

During this event, volunteers will:

Help decorate the Gov's Oasis, APSU's brand new campus relaxation room, to create a welcoming space that supports student well-being.
Sort and organize children's books for distribution.
Restock Little Free Libraries at local Head Start locations to increase access to books for young readers and families.
These projects are part of the APSU MPH Program's service-learning experience, which is supported through grant-funded initiatives that build community partnerships focused on advancing health equity.

Everyone is welcome—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members are encouraged to participate. No prior experience is necessary.

Event Details: August 24, 2026, from 1:00-3:00 pm. Meeting location is Health Professions Building, Room 223.

Preparation: Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for light volunteer activities and bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the event.
