Today, we pause to remember September 11, 2001, and to honor the countless individuals who showed extraordinary courage, compassion, and selflessness that day.
Our Community Builders enrichment group created this special bulletin board as a way to honor the memory of those who helped others during one of our nation’s most difficult moments.
At The Scranton School, we honor their memory by teaching our students the importance of kindness, compassion, service, and being an active member of their community. Because helping others starts here.

We’ve shared how our staff encourages and supports our students as they challenge themselves—but today, we’re celebrating how our students turned around and supported one of our own!
As Principal Sarah Briggs prepared to take on the challenge of a big race, our students created posters to cheer her on and show her just how proud they are of her.
These moments are about so much more than a race. They’re about teaching our students the importance of encouragement, kindness, perseverance, and showing up for others.
Preparing our students to be active, caring members of their community starts here.

We love seeing our students step outside their comfort zones, discover new possibilities, and know that the people who support them at school are cheering them on beyond the classroom too! Over the weekend, our director, Dean Pettinato, volunteered as a support water skier during an inclusive event hosted by Individual Abilities in Motion (I AM) at Chapman Lake. This gave one of our students the opportunity to try something new, feel supported, and experience the excitement of water skiing! For this student, it wasn’t just a day on the water. It was a chance to challenge himself, have fun, and make memories with his school community cheering him on. And having Dean there to share in the experience made the day even more meaningful! Here’s to new adventures, new experiences, and memories that last long after the water dries!

Last Friday, our director, Dean Pettinato, and Early Intervention Teacher, MaryAnn Stefko, spent the day with the staff of NEIU 19 during their opening day in-service at Lackawanna College! Dean and MaryAnn shared more about the work we do at The Scranton School and the services we provide to families throughout our region. Then it was time to get everyone involved! NEIU paraprofessionals took the stage and had a chance to perform in ASL with a little guidance from MaryAnn. We’re so grateful for our partnership with NEIU 19 and the opportunities we have to learn from one another, share our expertise, and build stronger connections throughout our community. Here’s to more collaborations, more learning, and more signing together!
