LEARN…
to acquire letter/sound knowledge through name recognition

Name recognition is a great place to begin when introducing letters and sounds. Our children are most familiar with their names, so why not start by getting them comfortable with the understanding that letters and sounds are so very important because they help us identify each other!

Start by giving the child a printed model of their name (with an uppercase letter at the beginning). Then encourage your child to trace over each letter as they say the name of each letter in their name. If your child does not know the name of the letter(s) in their name, tell them, and do this activity with them everyday until they’ve mastered the letters in their name!
If your child does not trace a letter using proper letter formation, try saying, “Let’s trace that letter together!” (Gently place your hand over theirs and name and trace the letter). Then say, “Your turn.” I encourage you to praise your child for their efforts, while ensuring that you are modeling correct letter formation.
Lastly, have the child try to make a copy of each printed letter underneath the printed model, again having your child name and write each letter.
SKILL FOCUS:
-Letter name
-Proper letter formation

Madelyn is getting ready for kindergarten! She’s been working hard over the past few weeks on letter naming and proper letter formation. As noted above, we started with something familiar to her…her name. 😉
