☀️ Untangling essays, applications & everything in between, but poolside 😜💗🎓💻🎓

The pool is still open, the sun is still shining, and my Wet Brush is still within reach… but September means college application season is officially here!

While my students are getting back into the school routine, I’m behind the scenes reviewing college lists, checking application requirements, brainstorming essays, and making sure every detail is coming together.

And yes… sometimes that means working poolside. 😎

Because whether I’m at my desk or sitting next to the pool, The College Approach is about making the college process feel organized, strategic, and a whole lot less overwhelming.

The Common App Activities section is only 10 slots and 150 characters each but it’s often the difference between a list that blends in and one that stands out. 📝

The biggest mistake I see? Students (and parents) treat it like a resume, cramming in every club they’ve ever touched instead of showing depth in the activities and experiences that actually matter.

As of August 1, the Common Application is officially live for the Class of 2027! 🚀

If you’re applying to college this year, now is the time to:
✅ Create or log into your Common App account
✅ Review your profile and application information
✅ Confirm your college list
✅ Check each school’s supplemental essays (many have been updated!)
✅ Start working on your personal statement
✅ Stay organized and avoid waiting until the last minute

Remember: While the application is now open, most deadlines are still months away. Take advantage of this time to submit thoughtful, polished applications instead of rushing in the fall.

🚨 The BIGGEST College Admissions Mistake I See Every Year…

Parents think college admissions starts senior year.

It doesn’t.

By the time senior year begins, many of the biggest opportunities have already passed.

Here’s what rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors should be doing RIGHT NOW:

📚 Freshmen
• Build strong study habits.
• Get involved in activities you actually enjoy.
• Explore interests instead of chasing a résumé.

🎯 Sophomores
• Start thinking about leadership opportunities.
• Challenge yourself academically.
• Visit a few local colleges just to get a feel for campus life.

📝 Juniors
• Build a balanced college list.
• Visit campuses.
• Prepare for the SAT/ACT.
• Start your résumé and brainstorm essay ideas.
• Show demonstrated interest where it matters.

🎓 Seniors
• Don’t wait until October.
• Apply early when it makes sense.
• Stay organized with deadlines, scholarships, and financial aid.

Every year I meet families who say:

Did you know that some colleges track how interested you are in attending?

This is called demonstrated interest, and at many schools it can make a difference in the admissions process.

Here are a few simple ways to show a college you’re serious:

✅ Visit campus (or attend a virtual tour)
✅ Open and read admissions emails
✅ Attend college fairs and information sessions
✅ Connect with your admissions representative
✅ Ask thoughtful questions
✅ Apply Early Action or Early Decision (when it makes sense)
✅ Write a strong supplemental essay that explains why that college is the right fit for you
