Meet Irene.
She's a teaching artist at One River Clark and Millburn Studios, who has been making art since she could hold a crayon.
When she found anime, it changed everything; her style, her subject matter, all of it. Now her work lives somewhere between Japanese culture, cats, and Labubus.
When asked what brought Irene to One River, she said: “I knew I liked two things– art and helping people. When I discovered One River I thought, this could be the place for me.”
Outside of class, Irene plays Overwatch and watches whatever anime her teen students recommend that week.
Her students know her taste, they know her hobbies, as well as her abilities...as she’ll often participate in the project.
Her students love to see what she can create. They also know that all she wears are crocs!
“Actually if I had a nickel for every croc-related gift I received I think I’d have a whole dollar,” she jokes.

Take a look at what's coming out of our Studios this summer!
Every week, a transformation. Images and materials turning into something new right in front of us. And the campers transform right alongside their work too. Some of them walk in having never touched this medium before in their lives. A few days in, they're marveling at their work (and so are their families!).
There's something about summer... Less pressure, more room to play?
By the end of the week, everyone's got their best ideas yet. It's quite magical.
Bryant's advice: don't get stuck on one idea. Your sketchbook is the closest notepad to you. It's where you experiment, try new things, take risks... That's the point of Experimental Sketching, one of our teen summer camps.
No clean, perfect pages here. One goal is trying things fast enough that you stop being precious about any one of them. Getting out of your comfort zone helps you grow as an artist, Bryant points out.

Ben started out drawing cars. Wanted to be a mechanical design expert.
Then comic books pulled him in. He started sketching his own characters, building his own worlds on paper.
He told us he wasn't sure he'd fit in at first. Hadn't really been around a big group of creative people before. Now he calls this place inclusive, imaginative, inspiring, and he's got his sights set on art school.

Pour painting is really just experimenting with a plan (usually!). Campers work with acrylic paint at different consistencies, testing what happens when you tilt the canvas, mix in different colors, or flip a cup and see where everything goes.
They learn a few core techniques: the bloom effect, ribboning, flip-cup, dirty pour, but the real fun is in the noticing. What made the paint spread instead of sit still? What happens when you add more? Why does one layer cover another like that?
