This month, Daniel Heidkamp chooses his Best in Show winners from the largest teen art exhibition in the U.S. and the work our members created is something else.
The prompt was simple: interpret a place that matters to you. What came back was incredible. Across 15 studios from New York to Oregon, 1,800 teen artists responded with painting, drawing, mixed media, animation, and digital design, each one mapping personal meaning in their own visual language.
Eight of them will earn a private studio experience with Heidkamp in Brooklyn this summer. The finalists are announced this month.
The research is catching up to what artists have known for years.
"Sometimes the most supportive thing we can do is tolerate our own discomfort as adults long enough to let them work through theirs, knowing that they have support right there." — Tammy, Sr. Director of Clinical Quality & Education, Kooth Digital Health
At One River, we see this in the studio every week. Art gives kids a safe place to try something hard, sit with it, and come out the other side. That's not a side effect of creativity. It's the point.

Summer camp is almost here!
In 'Bugs Butterflies and Bees' Camp Kids design, build, and paint a real insect sanctuary using natural materials, while learning the skills to make a structure that actually works and holds up.
They'll also dig into why it matters: the insects and butterflies it attracts, the role they play in our ecosystem, and what it means to build something with a purpose.
Camp is coming up fast and spots are nearly full. Register today: https://hubs.la/Q04kYRFN0
Where do artists show their work? Ask your child.
This month, kids across One River are doing exactly that: stepping into the room, standing next to their work, and letting it speak for itself.
Our new Student Exhibition Series gives every age group their own moment.
No combined shows. No sharing the spotlight. Just kids, their work, and everyone who showed up to see it: grandparents, best friends, siblings, parents who didn't expect to cry in an art gallery.

Meet Jacqueline.
She's 15, mostly self-taught, and has been drawing since before she could read. She's been at One River for 3.5 years.
She also has something to say about why people who think they "can't draw" are wrong about themselves.
"Whenever I see people attempting to draw, even a stick figure, they get embarrassed. They're already comparing themselves to someone else. Recognizing there are ways to improve at something as small as a doodle already makes someone an artist."
One River pushed her toward projects she wouldn't have chosen on her own.
She kept pushing.
She surprised herself.
"Art has always been about expressing the human experience. Sometimes that means a single scribble on paper."

"Just sit in your studio and make stuff."
That's Daniel Heidkamp. One of the most compelling voices in contemporary American painting and the artist inspiring 1,800 teen artists across One River Schools right now.
Not 1,800 copies of his work. 1,800 original interpretations of a place that matters to them. Painted, drawn, animated, designed. Every one of them made by a teenager who showed up and did the work... who sat in their local studio and made stuff.
That's the whole thing, really. You sit down. You make something. You do it again. You grow.
This summer, eight of those artists will win a private studio experience with Daniel in Brooklyn. The rest will be part of something that's never existed before: the largest teen art exhibition in the United States.
Exhibitions are open now across 15 One River Studios: from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut to Long Island, Texas, Indiana, and Oregon.

Meet Lisa.
She auditioned for an advanced art class in high school and got in. Then life happened, and she didn't pick up a brush again for decades.
In 2018, she walked into One River. She hasn't stopped creating since.
"I knew I always wanted to get back into art. When I read the description, this looked like the right place to be."
Since then she's been moving through collage, painting, beading, sewing; each project building on the last, each Tuesday night ending on a high.
Then one Tuesday, her husband died suddenly.
"I thought — where is the place I can go where I feel safe? I told my instructor what happened. We cried. Then I went back in the room and made some art."
That's One River.
