Back by popular demand: Youth Farmer Bags!

Last year, we saw firsthand how excited kids were to have safety items made specifically for them. This year, we’re excited to continue that effort with the second annual Youth Farmer Bags through Wright County Extension. The purpose of these bags is simple: give kids practical tools that can help keep them safe while they are growing up on the farm.

From protective equipment to resources that encourage safe decision-making, each item is included with farm safety in mind. We hope these bags give parents another opportunity to talk with their children about what it means to be safe around equipment, animals, buildings, and other farm hazards.

NEW Program: Wright County Livestock Judging! 🐖🐏🐑🐂

At theses monthly workshops we will learn about and practice livestock judging. This is a great opportunity for 9-12th grade 4-H and FFA members to practice for state contests. If youth would like to take a team to the state 4-H contest, I will help coordinate a team going. All workshop times are early outs or school breaks, so more youth may attend without skipping other activities.

What is Livestock Judging - Livestock judging consists of analyzing beef cattle, sheep, swine and meat goats and measuring them against a standard. It is the study of the relationship between an animal’s form and function. Livestock judging has two primary components, 1) placing a group of animals and 2) orally justifying your decision. At theses monthly workshops we will learn about and practice livestock judging. This is a great opportunity for 4-H and FFA members to practice for state contests.

A bag can start a conversation. A conversation can build a habit. A habit can help keep a child safe. That is the idea behind Safety Sprouts: Growing Smart Farmers in Wright County.

For the second year, Wright County Extension is providing Youth Farmer Bags filled with practical, child-focused safety items designed to support farm families.

Our hope is that each bag encourages parents and children to talk about safety, practice good habits, and recognize the importance of staying alert while spending time on the farm.
