It’s always difficult for me to find time to prepare for our homeschool day. Especially when I’m trying to organize curriculum, make a plan and find gaps… much less trying to prepare for regular life. So starting tonight, I asked my husband if he could do the bedtime routine. He readily agreed! Such a simple act, but the official transfer of responsibilities freed up my mind a great deal! I’ll now use that time to get work done with my “homeschool mom” hat on. Thanks for the tip, Nia!

I’ve learned so much this year. And even though I’m still not where I want to be, I’m still walking forward. The best decision we made mid-year was to join a homeschool community group. I’m laying on the couch, taking a break from the barrage of needs coming from my children. I put my arm over my head to try and sway them away from asking for my attention. Just.so.much.talking. Andy was doing bills at the table, so they all attacked him. I was feeling sort of happy - justified, even - to hear him try and complete his task while responding to each of the girls’ comments and questions and squabbles.

Then I heard him fart.

The girls all screamed and ran away.

Nicely played, Dad. I honestly never considered flatulence to be a reasonable option. Noted.

I took all my kids into Kohl’s to spend my Kohl’s Cash. My eleven-year-old was pushing my preschooler in the cart, dodging the other two girls amidst mannequins, carts and clothes stands. For a couple minutes, I pretended I didn’t even know whose kids they were. When we left, I thought, well, at least that satisfies the phys. ed requirement today. 🙄🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Okay, I’m finally ready! I created this weekly checklist for my sixth grader so he can see all of his work at-a-glance. It’s an idea I received from Kristi Clover’s eCourse on homeschool organization. The goal is to organize all the paperwork by week so each morning, kids can ‘pick up and go.’ Doing all this work early on will hopefully save us time all through the year as we attempt to pull the necessary materials we need for each day.

To create mine, I went through all of the curriculum I have for my sixth-grade son, Jack. I looked at the table of contents to see how they organized work and what materials he’d need. Then I created a spreadsheet tailored to him. I’m going to do my third-grader and my kindergartener next, but I wanted to share this one now. Jack’s are printed on green paper (which I’ve designated as his color.)

Today has been rough. All the warm and fuzzies about educating my kids at home have been depleted. And it’s only our second week. We’re 2.5 weeks into our new diet and I want to eat the world. We just got home from a great time camping this weekend and all I want to do is nothing. We all slept in, relaxed, did some laundry and cleaned the house ALL WITH COMPLAINTS and then PAINFULLY pushed through school. Perhaps I should have just skipped today. But honestly, I wasn’t sure what else we’d do. It’s completely possible I’m hormonal. I have a lot of feelings and emotions on a normal day. But today is hard. I really don’t want to keep doing this. And yet... we’ve made a commitment. When we lost our five-year-old son Ben to brain cancer six years ago, I realized that sometimes, a successful day just means that you made it through. And I’m claiming that reality today. I made it. And for today, that is success. And yes, I am completely aware of the fact that I could have posted a different caption to this picture and no one would have been the wiser.
