FEMunion at Harvey Mudd

Fighting s*xism in STEM since 2015. We bring students together, provide space and programmin

The purpose of the FEM (Feminist Empowerment at Mudd) Union is to bring students together and provide space and programming involving all genders. FEMunion would like to raise awareness of gender issues and make conversations about them more accessible to the students of Harvey Mudd College. Since we do not have a required gender studies class in our curriculum, this club will be benefit the entir

FEMunion just hosted our Kickoff Zoom! Normally we would host our annual Kickoff Brunch, but since we're not on campus that's unfortunately not possible (remember to wear a mask and stay 6 ft apart!). Thank you to everyone who attended, and if you weren't able to make it, please reach out to us with any questions or ideas for events! If you're interested in joining the leadership team, we'd love to have you!

Self Report: HMC counter(narratives) Zine Vol. 4 05/12/2020

Hello everyone! It's been a while since we've posted on this account, but we wanted to share what the FEMunion team has been working on throughout our quarantine.

The *Self-Report: Harvey Mudd (counter)narratives Zine Series* is a Harvey Mudd student-produced publication about the unheard stories of Mudd! We're really excited to bring this series back with the theme of: *Your impact on society? ...What about Mudd's impact on you?*

The PDF can be accessed here: https://tinyurl.com/y7hjfcqx

Speak up about subtle s*xism in science 12/08/2016

FEMunion is having its final dinner discussion of the semester this Friday at 6pm at the Hoch!! The topic is microaggressions! If you are confused about the topic of conversation or where to begin when trying to talk about microaggressions, here is an interesting article by Tricia Serio, a professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson and the department head for the Cell and Molecular Biology Department.

Hopefully this article provides a springboard for conversation surrounding microaggressions because we'd love a start a conversation that goes beyond Dr. Serio's experiences because microaggressions can manifest themselves in so many ways! Please do join FEMunion and Lupe MacIntosh (leading the discussion this week) for what should be a great dinner discussion!

Speak up about subtle s*xism in science Female scientists face everyday, often-unintentional microaggression in the workplace, and it won't stop unless we talk about it, says Tricia Serio.

There are a few spots left in our LIFTING WORKSHOP this weekend! Sign up link attached!

WHAT: Weightlifting workshops, taught by female lifters from Mudd!
WHERE: HMC LAC weight room
WHEN: Sunday, Dec 4th at 11:30am-12:30am
WHY: Weightlifting is often seen as a "masculine" sport, and it can be a cultural hurdle for non-males to get in the weight room and feel comfortable working with the barbell. If you've ever been interested in learning about correct form and training for exercises like squats, deadlift, and bench press, now is your chance to learn from some of HMC's seasoned lady lifters! We promise a welcoming environment for all genders and levels of experience. If you have a physical limitation that effects your lifting needs or goals, we will work with you to find suitable exercises. You all know your bodies and limitations best, but we are here to guide you through the challenging but oh-so-rewarding world of lifting.
Who: up to 12 attendees, including YOU!

more info:

If you are interested in attending, RSVP is required (link below) since we can only accept 12 students. We will send an email out to the first 12 sign ups before Sunday. Please wear flexible, breathable clothing for working out, and close toed athletic shoes (if you have them, flat-bottom shoes like converse are ideal for lifting).

FEM Union hosted a few lifting workshops last year which were very popular, so we're back for round two! This is our second and last workshop of the fall semester, with more to come in spring. There was a lot of interest last week and it was a great time (see photo!) So if you don't sign up in time this week, be on the look out for the future! We will also be starting an email list just for people who attend or are interested in casual group workouts!

Feel free to reach out with questions!

Obama’s Female Staffers Made Sure Their Voices Were Heard With a Genius Strategy 11/29/2016

A cool, concrete strategy for lifting up underrepresented voices!!

"Female staffers adopted a meeting strategy they called “amplification”: When a woman made a key point, other women would repeat it, giving credit to its author. This forced the men in the room to recognize the contribution — and denied them the chance to claim the idea as their own.

We just started doing it, and made a purpose of doing it. It was an everyday thing,” said one former Obama aide who requested anonymity to speak frankly. Obama noticed, she and others said, and began calling more often on women and junior aides."

Some food for thought in time for labor day, from Marcia J. Citron:

"Creation, which involves the mind, is reserved for male activity; procreation, which involves giving birth, is applied to women. Labor refers to men’s production, to women’s reproduction. Conceiving for males is mental and takes place in the head; conceiving for females is physical and occurs in the womb."
