On March 7, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut, HMC Bates Program and physics alumnus George "Pinky" Nelson ’72 presented 2022 Astronaut Scholarships to HMC recipients Amani Maina-Kilaas ’23 and Alec Vercruysse ’23. Maina-Kilaas (CS/math) and Vercruysse (engineering) talked about their research at Harvey Mudd and participation in the Astronaut Scholars program, while Nelson gave a talk about his experiences as an astronaut in the 1980s and his career since then. Prof. Fowler is thrilled to start as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Engineering at Mudd this Fall. She received her B.E. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from Vanderbilt University and her Ph.D. in Molecular Engineering from the University of Chicago. At Mudd, she and her students will pioneer designing, synthesizing, and characterizing bio-inspired materials for environmental applications, with a particular focus on the global clean water crisis. She is looking forward to teaching E138 Introduction to Environmental Engineering this Fall.
