In a joint statement from Superintendent Broadrick and SREA President Amber Hammond, the Claremont School District and the Sugar River Education Association/NEA-NH (SREA) are pleased to share a resolution to the payroll schedule issue that arose in the last few weeks. Both the District and the Union heard the voices of employees loud and clear and worked together to collaborate on a solution that meets everyone’s needs by ensuring educators receive necessary budget relief now and that the District can ultimately transition to a payroll schedule that ensures employees receive their first paycheck after the first day of work and their last paycheck around their last day of work. The District and the union look forward to the start of school and are committed to open communication as any challenges arise.

Background:

The resolution, approved by the SREA voting membership, allows for salaried teaching staff to be paid on August 14th of this year, adding an additional paycheck for the 2026/27 school year (23 and 27 payrolls, rather than 22 and 26) so that the last payroll of the year will end on June 18th of 2027. In this solution, employees who budgeted for their first paycheck to arrive on August 14th will have that relief. Adding one payroll to the schedule allows for a correct ending date in June of 2027 and ensures that the first payroll date for salaried teaching staff in the 2027-2028 school year will be at the end of the August, not the middle.

On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 3:30 p.m., a Claremont school bus was struck by a falling tree while traveling on Route 103 between Bradford and Newbury. Fortunately, passengers sustained only minor injuries, though the tree caused significant damage to the bus. The Project Red and Blue—a youth leadership camp for incoming sixth graders organized and run by School Resource Officer (SRO) Crystal Simonds—was returning from a field trip in Goffstown. The full-size Claremont School District bus – yellow and fully marked – carried a total of eighteen occupants, including fourteen children aged 10 to 11.

While traveling westbound on Route 103 near Village Road in Newbury, occupants of the school bus observed a large pine tree leaning near the westbound side of the roadway. Although the tree initially did not appear to be falling, it gave way as the vehicle approached. Claremont School Bus Driver Jesse Aiken had minimal time to react and accelerated the bus to clear the path of the falling tree. While passing the tree, it struck the rear of the bus, causing significant damage, particularly to the rear passenger side.

SRO Simonds promptly contacted emergency personnel and the parents of all children involved. Parents were requested to come to the scene, where they were briefed on the incident upon arrival and then reunited with their children. Claremont Police Chief Brent Wilmot also arrived on scene to assist with the parent-child reunification process. Additionally, the Claremont Bus Garage was notified and dispatched a second bus to transport the remaining children who were not able to be picked up directly by a parent.

Members of the district’s school nursing staff are reaching out to parents and guardians to follow up on each child’s condition and to ensure that medical needs are being met. Fortunately, there do not appear to have been any serious injuries.

“I want to commend bus driver Jesse Aiken for his decisive, quick actions, which significantly minimized the potential for harm to all of his passengers, “said Claremont Superintendent Tim Broadrick. “We are also grateful to SRO Simonds and Chief Wilmot for their quick, calm response and leadership.”

A message from Superintendent Broadrick:

Last week, our interim business administrator, Matt Angell, unexpectedly took a leave of absence from the SAU 6 office. While I was out of state for a preplanned vacation when this happened, I reached out to him as soon as I found out. Mr. Angell has decided that he wishes for us to find a permanent business administrator sooner rather than later, and he is ending his interim engagement with Claremont.

As you know, Mr. Angell came out of retirement with the idea that he would help Claremont to do some difficult, critically important work during a time of crisis in a temporary role. In doing so, he became a stabilizing force during the school district’s darkest hours.

While I had already started to try to staff the business office with permanent employees, Mr. Angell’s decision to leave has increased that urgency to bring in qualified people. I have been informally speaking with experienced business administrator candidates, and we have a realistic chance to fill his role quickly.

On Monday, a new staff bookkeeping clerk will be starting work full-time. We contracted with an experienced school business official who will be training staff in the federal grant reimbursement process, a critical need for this district. And next week, we have a second interview with a finalist to take over for Finance Director Laurie Mowrey, who retired at the end of June.

My objective is to fully staff the district business office by the end of August, and I believe we are well on our way to doing so.

Despite the timing of his decision, I am grateful to Mr. Angell for the difficult, thankless work he performed here in Claremont. He should have the entire community’s undying gratitude.
